converting rt-4wd to fwd... Any chassis mount differences?

I thought I read somewhere that the passenger side tranny mount was in a slightly different location on the 4wd vs. fwd models, meaning that to convert to fwd the pass. side chassis mount would need to be removed and welded into the proper position for a fwd tranny. But looking and comparing from my current CRX to my 4wd wagon this mount seams to be in the same location. The wagon is fully assymbled so it's kind of hard to get any accurate measurements. Do any of you have any info on this? Am I just trippin?

    you're tripping :P

mounts are all in the same place. basically, a 2WD tranny will bolt in no problem as long as you use the 2wd mount.

    i hope im right

When i swapped a 4wd tranny into my CRX i had to cut off the mount on the pas side and make my own. im fairly certain your gunna have to mod the mount to work with a standard FWD tranny but its not to hard.

my mount hole was too low i would imagine since your going backwards from me yours is gunna be to high so bolt the 3 other mounts in and see what u have to work with. u might be able to cheap and just drill 2 new holes about 2 inches below the original hole and maybe even get fancy and weld a nut on the back side so it works like a stock mount. good luck!

If it does place it too high I will probably drill out the spot welds and lower it down. Matter of fact even if it is in the "correct spot I am going to lower it. I was doing some measuring on my F2d setup in my CRX and have decided when it goes into the wagon I am going to lower the whole engine/tranny about 3/4" for more hood clearance. So no biggy, It'll get moved down regardless.

Maybe it's only different in the 4wd w/manual tranny. Because my wagon is an auto tranny 4wd, and I'm almost positive it looks more like your stock CRX mount.

i know i looked at my wagon and my rex and with my eye i couldnt see the difference the mounts looked identical.

    I've done a 4WD to 2WD Wgn. conversion.All the parts you need will come from a Civic Sdn.You'll need the Pass.side trans mount brkt.& maybe the mount.Sorry ,but I don't remember if you need the rear trans brkt.It shouldn't be any different going from a AT 4WD to a 5spd 2 WD,but I don't know.Don't forget the driver's side axle(I used a Sdn.axle).

You'll need Wgn.shift linkages/brkts or weld on extensions to any EF linkages in which case you can place the shifter any where you want.If you're going to use the OEM center console ,then it's the Wgn.linkage.Bring a hack saw ,cuz you'll need to cut out the shifter hole from any donor EF Civic(I used a sdn.).This you'll weld OR silicone & pop rivet in place.

Good time to put in poly trans/motor mounts, poly shifter bushings & short shifter if you want.Other optional things to put in since everythings out are strut/springs,sway bars & LSD.For bar options:

So there is no shifter hole in the floor?? I did an auto to manual on a hatchback and it already had the hole in the floor, it was just covered by something. and the wagon 2wd shift linkage is longer than the sedan/hatch/crx? Shit I figured that'd be the same length! As far as motor mounts I'm using the Hasport D series billet units.

Nope...No hole in the floor.Shift linkages (2) are Wgn.specific.Don't remember if it was a longer or shorter ,but looked to be a easy mod if u have the right size tube or rod. The other nice thing about modding the linkage is that you can adjust it so the shifter knob is closer to you or further away & still short shift.

Thanks for the info, I found a HB I can cut a chunk of floor out of.
  • I am thinking about buying a 4wd wagon shell, I currently have a 2wd wagon but it has rust and I would like to swap over all my 2wd stuff. What would I need in order to get it going?
