b16a vs b16b

I was comparing them the other day, I noticed that they had the same displacement (or at least on wikipedia). So I was curious as to what the real difference is, besides horsepower, torque, and tranny.

Is it that the b16b (since it is type t) just has some performance internal parts. Just my plan was to tune a b16a with performance stuff, and I was wondering if the type r version is just a tuned b16.

I hope yall understand what I'm asking, cause I'm not even sure if I understand what I just said :(

to me the most obvious difference is price :P B16Bs are like 4 times more then a B16A.
  • I know right! It's really not that much more power, so it's like an extra $2500 for a red valve cover, which wouldn't really match the color scheme I want
  • A B16B has an entirely different engine block than the B16A.

The B16B actually has the identical block to the B18C5/B18C Type R engine, believe it or not! The deck height is the same, meaning that a B16A header won't fit, and the B16B engine is as tall as the B18C series engines.

"So why if it's the same exact block as a 1.8L does it only have 1.6L?"

Well the key is that Honda destroked the B18C engine to create the B16B.

    "Why destroke it?"

The reason is that while it has the same displacement as its B16A brother it has a much better rod/stroke ratio, meaning that it can be revved higher, for longer periods of time, and is much better than any other B series engine for road racing in terms of longevity.

The B16B utilizes long rods and a shorter throw crankshaft in the B18C block.

This also explains why the B16B pistons have the most crazy tall compression domes, yet the B16B doesn't even have 11:1CR like it's big brother, the JDM B18C Type R because its shorter stoke yields less CR even with taller piston domes.

I'm typing this from my head, but a Google search also netted me THIS LINK (clickable)

It details the key differences between the B16A and B16B.

Basically in the end the B16A is nothing at all like the B16B. Buying a B16B is really much closer to buying a B18C Type R engine, and if you swapped in a 1.8L GS-R/ITR crank you'd have yourself an engine even better than the 1.8L B18C Type R because you'd also have the highly coveted "PCT" B16B high dome pistons already.

    Am I making sense?

    Bottom line though?

Honestly I've driven a real-deal CTR, right hand drive, etc. with a B16B (of course) and it had your regular Mugen intake, header, exhaust, etc. and you know what?

It did not impress me...at all. Sure it revved free and quickly, but it's slightly heavier older brother, the ITR is still faster because it has more torque and still lays down more overall power too.

For the money I'd seriously look into buying a JDM GS-R swap with an LSD tranny and IMO it'd be as fast stock for stock agsinst the B16B...actually faster from my driving experiences.

The B16B is cool to have just to say you've got one, but until they get cheaper than a GS-R swap it's a tough sell IMO.
  • That's pretty good for remembering off the top of you're head, what was you're GPA in school?

Thanks for the info man, I'm still in limbo but I won't have the money for anything till the summer, so I still got some time to think about.

just put like 50 vinyl stickers on your car, get some neon lights and z3 fenders. youll have like 800,000 HP at the wheels. but you wont have to race anyone and prove it, just tell them that gas is to expensive to be racing.

nice detailed reply tho. i learned a bit. any advice on boosting my y7? off the top of your head would be fine.....LOL.

Gee 800,00 HP is too much, maybe I'll just put on 25 vinyl stickers

My doctor told me I can't be furious anymore, and he stills advises me about cutting back on fast.

Anyway thanks for the GSR suggestion, that would probably fit my budget and I would have some left to rice it up
