How To Install Rear Foglights?

  • If you want the little indicator light to work when the fogs are on, you need to ground the switch.
This thread is going around in circles now LOL :P

i want the switch to light up... what do i do to make that happen...?
ground the switch--- which black wire do i ground???

    follow wagodizzles pic????
  • I connected the left black wire and the left red/black wire to a spare battery and when the switch is depressed the little orange indicator lit up. So I'm guessing this would work best:

Wire the red/green to the fogs and run seperate grounds for them, run the red/black from the fuse block(I'm not sure the best way to do this so trial and error it), and ground the black wire under the red/black. Now I didn't test this but I think the red/white wire and black wire under it is for the light that actually lights the switch when you turn on your dashlights so if that is the case it would need to be wired into something that turns on when your dashlights turn on, maybe like the power in to the light for the defrost switch. I'm gonna do some more fiddle farting around with the switch tomorrow so hopefully I'll have it actually locked down.

This is like CSI Miami detective work here...cue the awesome music and
guy with a deep voice 8)

i was actually thinking the same thing you were; which is seeing how
the rear defrost is wired and basically following that...
  • We need Eagle to pop up and give us an EDM wiring diagrram!!!

    EAGLE BEAG WHERE ARE YOU!!!!
  • OK I have it figured out!!!! The switch was upside down in previous pics!

This is for a '91, I think '88-'89 have different fuse box's. You have to remove your fuse box but don't worry because he plugs only plug back in one way so you won't be able to get them confused.

Obviously both Black wires go to a ground. So ground them

The RED/WHITE wire from the switch goes to a RED/YELLOW wire that runs into a BLACK plug on the back of your fuse box. The RED/YELLOW wire comes form the switch on your steering column that turns on your parking lights and headlights. This is the power into the switch for the fog lights and also lights the on/off indicator when the switch is depressed. I stripped some of coating back on the RED/YELLOW wire and solder the wire from the plug to it. This is a pain in the ass because there isn't much free wire because of how close the loom is to the plug. DO NOT CUT ANY OF THE WIRES ON YOUR HARNESS!

The RED/BLACK wire from the switch goes to the only RED/BLACK wire that runs into a BLUE plug that is plugged into the front of your fuse box. Do the same here, strip back some coating and solder the wire from the switch into the RED/BLACK wire going into the plug. This will illuminate the switch when the dashlights come on.

And that leaves the RED/GREEN wire which runs to the foglights. Run this wire to the GREEN wires on the fogs then wire the BLACK wires to grounds.

If you did this right, your switch will light up when the rest of your dash lights come on and when you have the headlights on you will be able to depress the switch which will turn on your fogs and switch indicator light. This is the factory way that it is wired so that when you turn your headlights off the fogs will turn off too.

    SIMPLE!!!
^^I put simple before I wired my fogs up, it is not simple, it was a pain in the ass. I took out my front seat just to have more room to get under my dash?!?!?. It was freezing cold out but I was sweating from wiring LOL

THANK YOU RAGEN!!!!!!! for the link to that wiring diagram

  • I think I'll wire everything before I put the fogs in anyways. No prob wago.. don't stress.

do empty fuse holes/areas/connections/whatevertheyare already have power running to them?

if so, then one could tap into the #9 fuse for power, right?
  • wagodizzle wrote:

Yeah if there is power running into the #9 spot. If its not being used I would assume that it wouldn't even be wired. If you wanted you could just run power into the switch and not fuse it at all but that means that the illumination light will be on and the switch will be "hot" all the time so it would be easy to burn down the battery if you forget to turn them off.
  • SiWagonSiWagon Council Member
What you don't realize are these fusebox/harnesses are wired for several models & for different countries so #9 may well be hot.
  • i vote kingsize fire extinguisher ...
    right here right now

  • Don't know about you guys but my bumper is marked for rear fogs!!

I have a 91 with two rear foglights seems like there is no power going to the switch. Its the set that I bought from Ragenasian. Im in vacation in Tennessee. So whatever ideas you have shoot them my way and ill check them out when I get back home.

So those of you that already have the rear fogs on. How did you secure them to your bumper. I know about like epoxying the covers but what about the actual fogs? I want to get them on buy Sunday for the local socal Eibach meet. LMK guys. It'll be high appreciated.

Thanks man. I wish I had those brackets, they would come in handy.
  • now you mention it...
almost any kind of metal would make that bracket ...
it just hangs there supported by 2 screws and a lip
    hell, impregnated cardboard even...(naahhh)

    ps.
    dustlight aka as radar (sorry)
  • If you look at eagle beagle's pics you will see that our bumpers are different. According to wagodizzle we don't have the metal bumper support. He said he found this out when he was here on vacation pulling parts.

So that metal bracket is just a clamp onto the plastic bumper. Can you not get some long thin bolts and put a nut and washer on the back? Or drill and tap some holes into the metal support?

    Just some ideas.
  • ThaClutcHThaClutcH Senior Wagonist
Hmm. I believe I cut too much of my bumper support then. Thin bolts and nuts should work. Even making my own brackets would too...
  • anyway, those 3 supports are there for positioning and, yes, attaching ...
that is what the bracket does with the foglight housing

cosmetic plastic bumpers, yes, and behind it an f-ugly steel bar for an real impact

    : )
  • The rear fogs don't have anything to do with the metal bumper support on USDM wagons. Get rid of the whole thing if you want too. Its just the skin that matters with the rear fogs. The metal bracket on the back of the fogs is a sort of clamping device so when the fog lights screw through the buckets in to the metal backet, it pinches it all together like a foglight/bucket/bumperskin/metal bracket sandwich. The fogs do not bolt to anything other than the bracket that they come with. If you don't have the bracket, cut the hole in the bumper skin a tad smaller than the bucket and glue/epoxy the buckets in there. What I did was use the small metal clips like the ones that allow a screw to be bolted to the plastic dash pieces (i.e. for instance the screws that hold the instrument cluster cover to the dash use these or that hold the front bumper turn signals) instead of the metal bracket to screw the fog light to the bucket.
