4WD in my CRX?

ill start this post here,im not sure how many peopel will read it int he noob garden but still.

i desire a better drivetrain. i don't wanna go k series or be series and use CRV parts. what issues ( im sure theyll be some) would i run into trying to hybridise a 4wd civic wagon and a 91 CRX si?

What issues? That's a broad question...
Off the top of my head: gas tank relocation, drive shaft length, mounting rear diff./axles, ground clearance.

All issues can be resolved obviously and there are many different ways to go about it. Sounds like a fun project.

Buy a 4WD parts wagon (complete).

Off the top of my head, you'll need the 4WD front hubs, 4WD gearbox, 4WD shift linkage (cable), driveshaft, 4WD rear crossmember, possibly the 4WD gastank (not sure if the CRX tank has the bump for the driveshaft), lower control arms, rear hubs and drum assembly..

rear trailing arms will be custom. you will need to hybrid the CRX and Wagon rear trailing arms together.

I'd reccommend running a DOHC ZC, i do in my Shuttle RTi and its great fun!!

I'm sure theres other parts and other people will have input... :D

Oh i moved it to engine & drivetrain.. :D

haha yeah i was looking for it back in the newbie garden, and it had disappeared

this sounds like a very interesting project. i wonder if anyone has done this before.....

Yes it has been done before... Once to my knowledge. They used the Wagon parts..

Might want to take a look at this, CRX half complete. Only thing that i would do differently is use the rear crossmember from the 4th gen RT4WD wagon to take advantage of the independant suspension.

It's been done on a crx in Canada before, with a b series system tho...also on an integra in Honda Tuning magazine from the US, but again with a b series rt4wd system.

do you guys know that there were jdm, etc.. DC integras with the rt system, and also 4th gen 4drs with it! :P
  • HaydzHaydz Moderator
Sure, even the accord came with RT4WD :D

why does the USDM only get the bare minimum in car models?? i mean, take a look at Japans Honda website, they have like 40 some cars!!!!

Not easy. Tunnel for propellor shaft, shorten propellor shaft, shorten rear trailing arms, fab mounting for rear pumpkin, move tranny mount.

I havent seen a 4th gen awd civic sedan personally, but Ive seen the 5th, 6th, and 7th gens with awd. Ive also seen the DC chassis with awd. That one has the nice frontend too. One thing Ive noticed is all the awd Hondas Ive seen available (other than the Accord) all have 1.6 motors in them. Im not aware of any DC teggy with a 1.6. So I was guessing that all of the non-accord awd Hondas have either the ZC or the sohc 1.6 motors in them. Ive seen DC's with sohc motors in them, but they were all theft recoverys. How sad would that be? I felt sorry for the kid that came in here with one. He had no clue that he was shorted a cam and a few liters :(

I was also browsing around the Japanise auctions and found a 4 dr EP chassis awd wagon. It was pretty cool looking. It looked just longer than the hatch, but had mo doors.

Keep us posted on the progress with the CRX, That will be one badass little car. Another thing that would make it thee ultimate autox car would be to add the AWS system from the 90-91 Preludes. Can you imagine a awd aws CRX? Can you say salom master?

I've seen EF Civic sedans here with RT4WD, they had the SOHC ZC, same with the DA Integra RT4WD. There are d, b and f/h series RT4WD boxes though... don't forget the CRV and Odyssey.

So there was an 1.6 sohc awd DA teggy?? Thats one I have crossed paths with either. Thats crazy. Are they available in coupe and sedan?

If I would have driven 8 hours to the other side of Germany I could have bought a 1992 4dr sedan with 4wd. I asked some of the dealers here and they didn't even hear about it. The guy sent me pics and everything of the car. Knowing how rare it was I should have driven my lazy ass over there. Oh well I still have a nice wagon.

^^^Any idea on what motor/tranny combo it had? Thats badass. I need to watch the auctions a little closer if cars like that are available.

Ive been eyeing a 98 AWD Integra with the ITR style frontend on it in silver that looks really nice. It keeps going through the auction, but then I see it again the next week. Like its an ebay auction that didnt meet its reserve or something.

Here's some info you might be able to use:
    http://www.honda.co.jp/pressroom/librar ... index.html

You'll need to run the pages through a translation application, but you can get all the specs and information about all the jdm models going back through the 70s.
