Tips on backyard engine removal

I'm looking for tips on backyard engine removal.

I'm picking up my Lada wagon in about 3 weeks, I need to accelerate the scraping of my 90 Civic wagon parts car in order to make some room.

The biggest components left to pull from the wagon are the engine and tranny, which I want to keep as spares.

I welcome any tips, hints or recommendations about doing this in my backyard on a gravel driveway.

I was thinking of jacking the car up higher and lowering the engine and tranny onto a dolly. Comments, suggestions ???

Thx !!!

Funny you should ask because the car is parked under a tree... and I was also considering using the item below to remove the engine from the top.

It has a 1,000 lb. capacity and I doubt a Civic engine weighs that much.

I could use one of my fancy scouting knots and tie the hoist to one of the main branches over the car and hoist the engine up that way... and then lower it onto the dolly.

    Cheers !!

other than dig a hole in the ground, im out, without tools or gadgets...

Ya, that's a given... I plan to be around a long time and continue using those knots we discussed earlier.

As a safety precaution, I had my son (18 years old and built like a linebacker) spotting me when I removed the exhaust in one single piece. On the plus side, the exhaust it pretty pristine, except for a small hole I'm going to ask my big 'bro to weld up.

    Cheers !!

I used a couple buddies, a rafter and 2 tie down straps to lift my cavi motor and trans out.

Edit: Another thing u could try is getting a buddy to pull it out with a winch off of like a truck. Take winch go through a pulley and connect to engine.

If you're "shadetreeing", it'll be much easier to come out the top than to lift the car off of the powerplant. I don't know about a rope hoist, but I've pulled maaaany engines with a chain hoist, and even a "come-along" cable puller.
  • What about jacking the car up high in the front and sliding the motor out throught the driver side wheel well. I've done that before and it wasn't too bad.

Over here you can hire a portable block and tackle for like $30, i would think something like that would be the way to go, very easy as it has a hydraulic jack and can't topple over. They fold up and can fit on the back seat or in the boot. Much safer than a tree.

  • Oh man, there are so many things that could be said about that pic there wagodizzle. I mean the fact that there are 4 dudes, in a trailer park, pulling out a motor with a 2x4

The flip flops are a nice touch too

my neighborhood is slightly different  and a good 45 minutes from this place.

as far as the 2x4...well.... we used what we had

to bad it's gravel. i would say just buy an engine hoist but they don't roll so well on gravel. i know, i've been. second thought, i still think buy one. if you are taking the engine out, you're going to put it in at some point as well. engine hoist with the leveling bar and you've just saved yourself much grief. they pack up into pretty tight spaces as well.

other tips would be, buy a roll of blue shop towels from canuck wheel. those are worth their weight in gold. a white paint marker for labeling parts is also a really good idea. nothing worse than coming across a tranny in your shop and not having any clue what year (88-91) it came from. having a few empty ice cream pails around comes in really hand as well. drink lots of beer .

this thread has to be one of my favorites :D
  • As a teenager I removed the engine, trany, and subframe from a Datsun 310 in the backyard under a tree. I put it up on blocks and dropped it out the bottom using a floor jack. I then lifted the mostly stripped frontend up by hand while my mom slipped bricks under the body until it was just high enough… Then I drug the whole drivetrain out with a riding mower…

Kind of redneck but I prefer Appalachian American…

that's some funny sh!t right there.
  • yeah, he probably has the horse too
  • jack the car up a little bit (wheels still toughing the ground), put wooden blocks underneath the engine, loosen all bolts etc etc. Then cut out the front end of the car (I guess you won't need that) en then simply drive the car backwards....
