2WD Timing ajustments values and fuel consumption

Since I acquired my 90 2WD auto Wagon, I was always bothered by pinging noise even by a slight pedal increase up hill steep or not. Always that pinging noise wich drove me crazy... I was doing then 320-340 miles on a 10 gallon fill up 87 octane on highway only.... I sometimes would fill it up with 91-92 and the pinging would drop but never at a satisfaction point.

I finally ask my new mechanic to have a look at the timing and he said it was agressively set at (16).... He said usually it is between 12-13 for civics... So he drop it a little bit but couldn't get it to where he wanted in such a short time... I got something around 11.5 now. He told me it would decrease my gas intake and it did not! But it did solved the pinging issue but it is really slow to react to pedal increase.

I do now at most with a timing value of 11.5 280 miles. 98% no pinging.

What are your observations with timing values with your wagon?

I think he was asking what everyone else has there timing set at and what the effect was. Maybe he was trying to see if anyone had a good combination of timing and octane that worked good for them on a well worn motor.

Or we could be dicks to him and tell him to go fly a kite, right SiWagon??

:? My intent was NOT to b mean.
Everything Intrust16 says is correct. There's nothing wrong with intrust16's Wgn.

    EPA pegs the Wgn @ 24/29 mpg. intrust16 's getting 32-34 mpg.

I'll throw in this observation. It'll tend to ping more during the summer than winter .What I use to do was run 89 oct.gas during the summer & 87 the rest of the year.
