oil consumption/burning oil

I've got a 91 rt4wd with the d16a6. At the moment, it is burning oil at a rate of about 1.5-2 quarts every 500 miles or so. As a result of this, my tailgate is all black due to the residue of the carbon coming out my exhaust. There is also smoke coming out of the exhaust when I shift from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd. I can also smell either burning oil or exhaust when I'm driving with the windows down. That I assume is an exhaust leak somewhere up front.

I've searched and have come up with valve seals and/or rings needing some replacing. Does this sound about right? And is it a fairly simple procedure to do myself?

Thanks in advance!

More likely to be valve seals and dizzy seal. Can you see the leak anywhere?

Id bet on the rings too. Good thing D16A's are cheap ;)

Bad valve seals make most of thier smoke on startup then the smoke dissapears untill the next startup, at least thats how it usually works for me.
  • my car does this too, however i have a missfire, if you pull the plug wires out and look at the bottom (contact area with spark plug) if it has oil on it you might just need new spark plug seals, just bought some tonight at autozone for $15, cheap fairly easy fix. good luck.

Doh, thats what i was meaning - the spark plug hole seals.
  • also i noticed that i am getting sh!t ass mpg! whats with that? i'm guessing my valves arent sealing and i am running on 3 cylinders maybe? does that sound right?

your cam is a tooth off. my wagon runs so much stronger than yours and i think thats why. put it at top dead and check where the cam gear lines up. or a bent valve from snapping your timing belt at like 100mph

as for the burning oil, most likely valve seals, the main seal on the pulley side of your crank, or right below the distributor. I lucked out on my motor and have all three leaks YAY!!!! Three strikes your out, i actually have to get a couple of quarts of black gold before i go to work today.
  • to check and see if it is the spark plug seals you could start the car and pull a spark plug wire and see if the car sputters, if it does put the wire back and try the next one, if it doesn't sputter, that is the one where there is a miss fire. turn the car off and look at the plug connection side of the wire. if there is oil on it then the seal is bad. remove the plug and check that. if that doesn't work and you don't have a "leak down tester" use the homeade version...a cup of water (THE HEAD MUST BE REMOVED FROM THE CAR TO DO THIS) lay the head down in such a manner that you don't screw anythin up and the valve/combustion chamber side faces up, make sure it is level and that all the valves are in the seated position. pour some water into each of the four combustion wells, if you see bubbles=bad seals there as well, be carefull when pouring, clean up any misses and if you see water coming out from somewhere track it back and pinpoint which cylinder the seals are bad on, if any are bad i would recommend replacing them all. both of the above problems may cause you to burn oil and have crap mpg. evol's post is another good reference
