Driving problem on a 2wd

Long time reader, first time poster.

I have a 91 2wd and sometimes while I'm accelerating the car acts like I'm pushing in the clutch, but just for second. Its a wierd jerk feeling, its hard to explain. and at the same time I hear a click under the dash, like a relay or something. Sometimes it does this alot and then other times, not at all. I already checked the tension on the clutch, and I do need a new right side axle, but I dont see how that could have something to do with this. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I'm an idiot, I should have posted this in the engine forum. Sorry bout that.
  • Sounds like the clutch is slipping. Clicking could be from motor rocking back when the clutch hooks back up.
  • Main relay bad?

When the car jerks - does it rev like you pushed in the clutch or does it sorta stall then pick up again?

^^^Very common problem with the EF's. Main realys do weird stuff when they go out. Usually in hotter weather. Clutches tend not to be intermitent. Once a clutch goes bad, its bad and youll know.

I'm convinced its some sort of relay. It lags down, like I pushed the clutch in. Then is resumes. If its a main relay, where can I get one?
  • You have me confused...

I've had the problem with the relays before and its more like when you are on the throttle, the engine is being flooded but just briefly.

So do you mean that? ^^^

    Or more like below?

If I'm cruising on the highway and push in the clutch the rpm's shoot up. Like what would happen if the clutch is slipped and the flywheel broke away for just a second before you let off the gas and let it "re-engage".

you can grab a main relay at advanced auto for around 60$, thats where i got mine. make sure you get the right relay, theres also another that goes to something else. i made a write up about replacing your main relay around here somewhere. dig it up.

Personally, I wont use any electronics other than Honda. Thier electrical system is really finikey. Especially when you use non honda ignitors/coils. Ive also seen a non Honda cap and rotor blow a coil on less than 5 miles. Resistance is what kills the components in the distrubitor. Keep up on your plugs/plug wires and have a lot less likley chance of ruining dist components.

Main relays can be repared as well. Basically what goes wrong with them is a bad connect. I have a guy here locally that repairs them for 20 bucks. Do a search on Honda Tech. I think thats where he got the info. Im using 2 "fixed" main relays in two of my cars right now.

And it might be a long shot as to whats wrong with your car, but we had a thrust bearing go bad in our EX sedan. Took us a long time to figure out wtf was going on. It would try and stall out whenever you pushed in the clutch. Made no sence till one day Im under the hood telling my girl to press in the clutch when all of a sudden I see the entire crank pulley stick out and almost hit the framerail. Weird shit. That was a first for me.

Yes evo, that first part is what I mean. I checked NAPA and I could get one at cost for 45 bucks, retail is 90. My dad owns a muffler shop out here, so I buy parts though him. I might just do that.

Source one through Honda too, if its not that much more I would recommend the Honda relay.

You can get a Main Relay at any junkyard that let's you pull the relay for $3-$10 .The other way to repair the relay is to resolder all the solder points. You or your Dad can do that. From what I hear that's what those relay repair guys do.

I will check the junk yard tomarrow when I go to pull a seatbelt for my S-10. I was there last week and pulled a climate control unit for my wagon from an lx 4 door, they have a few of them there. I might pull a couple just for good measure. They have 4doors all over that place.
