Dreaded rear clunk

So I am getting the rear clunk at almost every 1-2 gear shift. At first, it only happened every so often, now its all the time.

I was looking for threads on this, as I know there were a few, but I didn’t seem to find any with actual diagnoses. Was it the bushings for the rear diff, or something else all together?

Anyone with the rear “clunk” issue who has solved it, please point me to the thread or let me know what it was!

As a side note, depending on what this actually is, do I need to be worried about driving it around? I got a lot on my plate right now, fixing this wont be first on my list……

  • yeah i get that too some times when i accidentaly pop the clutch. i'm sure its just worn out bushings that mount the rear diff to the body. i've heard of people ripping the the mounting points off the body but it sounded like they were thrashing on their cars.

I had this on the bwagon and on the d wagon bad now. On the bwagon, I took the mount off and filled all the open area with window urethane and let it dry a week, reassmebled and problem solved. I need to do this to the other car. Im sick of hearing that clunk too.

Are you talking about the one mount at the rear of the diff or the two mounts above the diff?

The single one behind the diff.
  • i had this same problem with the rear diff mount. so i baught a new one from the dealership. cost me $45 but had to wait 2 month cause it was backordered. also the part is call the rear diff insulator.
  • Nice, thanks for the solve boys and girls. When I get some down time Ill see about getting it fixed!
  • Just a heads up:

It's a really simple thing to do to replace this mount. I picked this up from Honda for $35. Just jack up the rear of the car, remove the muffler, then there is 3 bolts holding the mount on, a through bolt and then 2 bolts on the rear diff. It took me 30 minutes max and that was because I had to keep walking back up to the house to get fresh brewskis.

one of my bolts the go in the rear diff came out one time so it clunked... doubt thats it but just a suggestion. if u cant get your hands on a mount u can always get some winshield glue and fill the mount.
  • Sorry to bump the thread, but i have this clunk.

I replaced the rear mount that you guy's are talking about (the old one was torn), and put a new one in. It still clunks but it's more of a thud now.

Any other suggestions to get rid of the thud? It's such a PITA, especially in 1st and 2nd stop start traffic.

    TIA.
  • check the other 2 mounts?
  • I didn't know there was more then one.

    Where are the other two?

On the top of the diff itself, not behind it.

Oh, i've never noticed them there before... How would i best access them? remove the dif? does it bolt to the subframe?
