Replacement Fuel Pump

Scenario:
I was zipping along the freeway at 70 mph whn suddenly the car just started bogging down and losing power causing me to turn on my hazards and cruise to the far right emergency lane. Tried to start it but to no avail (all guage lights would turn on but the car would just keep cranking).

Status:
Just determined that my 90 Wagon needs a new fuel pump after following the step-by-step instrucions in the Honda Shop Manual. It instructed me to place a jumper wire in the Main Relay P-Connecter between the BLK/YEL wire and the YEL/BLK wire, then check if there is voltage coming from the YEL/BLK wire and BLK wire p-connector that plugs into the fuel pump - low and behold there is and the manual simply stated to "replce the fuel pump." Now I am asking how difficult is it to do and what replacement pump I should buy (NAPA and AutoZone has a pump only for $200 each).

Also, I heard of people replacing theirs with WALBRO's... Whatever your suggestion, part number and source to buy from, please...

Thanks in advance!

  • If you have the RT4wd I know you don't have to drop the tank. Their is an access "panel" under the rear seats. Fairly simple procedure.

The FWD wagon has the same fuel tank (saddle type tank to clear the 4WD driveshaft), so the pump replacement is the same using that little access panel under the rear seat.

i have read that oem is good if your not boosted. it is more reliable but not performance rated.
oem fuel pumps are good and realiable only up too 200hp.
if its an old pump it wont flow that much.

walbro do have more juice flowing out of it but there are some history of it failing early. the occurance is very small but i has happend.
since its more performance related its also going to be a tad bit more noisy when its running.

depending on what your trying to do, you can choose either one. the price is somewhat close together.
