What brand Gear oil for Rear Diff?

What brand of gear oils is everyone using for there rear diff?

As I just bought my wagon (and the fluids look like they have never been changed) I am working on changing everything right now.

I am thinking about using the royal purple synthetic in the rear diff (http://www.royalpurple.com/prodsa/mgeara.html), but does anyone have any other suggestions? :?: [/url]

  • Wow

I thought this would bring up tons of discussion. Aparently not.......

Has no one changed the gear oil in the rear diff before? What did you use and why?

I used Redline 75w-90. I used it cause it was on the shelf ;)
  • Good enough answer as any! :D

As I recall, I also used whatever was on the shelf (at Autozone). There was only one brand in the specific weight I needed so there wasn't any choice. It was a major manufacturer, I just can't remember who.

I'm willing to bet that it hadn't been changed since the car was new(has 180k on it now). My dad bought the car with 53k on it and according to his extensive records, there is no evidence it had been done.

How easy is it to change the rear diff oil? I don't have a helms or haynes manual for my car. :( Been trying to locate a haynes manual for a while.
  • My plan was to use the Penzoil Syncromesh in the tranny and the Royal Purple out back.

Anyone have any experience with the royal purple?

Its easy. Look at it and youll see what needs to happen. Car just needs to be level. One thing though, always make sure you can get the fill plug out. Cause if you cant your screwed. Take both plugs out at the same time. So you know you can get fluids back in.

Royal Purple has two grades. Weve used the race grade, pretty much same prices as Redline. No complaints. Oils oil when your forced. It all turns nasty ass black in no time at all.
  • How many bottles needed to fill the diff? I think 2, but wanted to ask!
