Can someone give me clarity on brake upgrades?

The brake upgrade sticky turned into a k series swap discussion, and I still don't think I'm totally clear on the best way to upgrade brakes. Here's what I think I understand so far for my '90 wagon:
Front:
-crossed drilled EX rotors (bigger?)
-stainless brake lines
-upgraded fluid
-Hawk (or equivalent) pads

Rear:
-stainless lines?
-better shoes
-?

Master cylinder:
-15/16

So.. Do I understand correctly that there are larger front rotors available that are direct replacements in leu of wagon rotors (EX sedan)?
Is there anything more I should do for my rear drums?
And finally, what's the 15/16 master cyl that I should be able to get ahold of easiest? 89 accord lxi, or ???

Thanks!

  • You will need EX or 90-93 integra knuckles to go from 9.5" to 10.2" brakes. You can't just use the brake disc on the existing knuckles. Also, the EX knuckles are supposed to give slightly better handling so get them if you can but the integra knuckles work perfectly fine and you probably couldn't tell the difference anyway.

For the rear you can buy/make rear disc swaps but I'm not exactly sure how. I wouldn't really say it is worth the effort to upgrade rears except for maybe brake shoes.

The 90-91 EX master cylinder is bolt in and an excellent upgrade. If you go with rear disc brakes you will want to switch the proportioning valve.

Check out thatdoodle's stuff in the sponsors area. That would be the easiest way to get the largest brakes possible.

Not a want, but a must. Our brakes didnt work at all with the incorrect prop valve. Other than that, eldonciv gave great info.

Eldon, any idea what make the EX spindals handle better? Thats the first Ive heard of that before. Now you got me curious.

will this help to get the caliper farther away from the center hub? thanks

Not sure what you mean exactly.

I believe it revolves around the fact that the DA spindles are slightly taller (iirc) and this changes the camber more aggressively during compression. Again, only internet hearsay but it does seem to be a widely agreed fact that the DA spindles are of a slightly different geometry than the civic spindles and that should lead to a handling change of some sort. I honestly never compared the two spindles in question.

lol. well i want the calipers to be farther away from the middle of the rotors, the center hub. since he says that the ex are larger then i guess the calipers will be at least an inch farther away from the center hub of the rotor. i want to do this because everytime i get a flat tire in the front, the spare tire does not fit cause the studs are too long and the little ring that i use as spacers dont help there. yeah it sucks. my studs are not stock

So you're saying that you have extended studs and the nuts bottom out before the spare wheel is tightened on the hub but that you need the extended studs because you have wheel spacers so your wheels clear your current calipers? You could try open ended nuts. The ex/da spindles will move the caliper away from the hub maybe .5" (just a guess).

:? You're confusing us all.The only reason the spare won't fit is with the EX big brake set-up is that you'll need to go to a 14''+ wheel. The longer studs & ring are NOT the prob. That's why the CRX & EX came w/14'' wheels.
 Don't forget to upgrade the spare to a 14''+ too.

lol sorry guys. well the studs are not stock, i bought longer studs so the rim could fit w the spacers. they are not even spacers, they are like little rings that i put on each stud because the spacers also hit the bottom of the caliper, so now i want to make my wagon a car show and i want to do this upgrade. i want to put the stock studs back so i dont have to use this little rings. i also dont want to use spacers. will this upgrade work w the rt4wd too or just the 2wd.

His prob has nothing to do with any custom work. :?

If you goto the EX set-up the caliper will be further away so your spacer shouldn't hit.Yes the mod will work on both the 2&4 wd.

im really interest on doing this setup. what do i need besides the rotors from the ex (is it has to be from the year 90 too?) and do i need to do a custom modification or does everything just bolt in. thanks guys

Any 88-91 EX knuckle, caliper, rotor (10.2)and pads. That's it.Just match the knuckles to make sure they're NOT bent.

EX's were only 90-91. The 90-93 integra front knuckles are also useable.

sweet... thanks guys. i guess the pads has to be for the ex too since the caliper are from the ex
  • hello wagon people. ok im not gonna do a rear disk conversion now maybe in the future. my question is...... is there a performance or better that stock brake shoes for my 88 rt4wd? is there a pace to just haveit relined with better shoe pads? \

    thanks in advance................wagon 4ever..........

most people recommend Hawk HP+ pads, thats what i'll be using soon. TireRack.com has them the cheapest I could find.
  • astutoastuto Wagonist
do i have to change the hub in order to upgrade to the ex knuckles on my wagon? or can i keep my rt4wd hub... not sure if they are the same.
  • use the whole assembly: knuckles , bearing, calipers, rotors. you don't need the upper and lower control arms.

Get open ended nuts to solve your spare problem.

Also the Hawk Hp+ Pads are really good on the track but really really dusty, mine were also quite noisy when braking lightly until the were bedded in properly

how bout the just the Hawk HP pads not the +'s??
  • NZ-DB8RNZ-DB8R Moderator
Not sure sorry havnt used just Hawk HP, over here they are a nice cheap pad ( I think HP+ were $186 for the front of 98spec ITR) so probably a worhtwhile upgrade.

I have heard that Hawk can be harch on discs but ive dont a couple trackdays with the HP+ and havnt noticed much

are the brake parts from a mid 90s EX a direct bolt in? I may have found a set but wanted to make sure before i get them.

mid 90's meaning 95?? clarify please, the year does matter.
  • stephenstephen Senior Wagonist
sorry for not being more specific. the brake parts are from a 97 EX coupe(would that be late 90's?).
