Quaife ATB Differentials

You can get a genuine mugen article for about the same price... fits EF3/7 Civic/CRX with DOHC ZC motor.. not sure if they fit into other L3's but i don't see why not.
  • A LSD knocks full seconds off of your typical autox times. I love mine in my CRX. It completely changes how the car performs off the line and powering out of corners.
The Quaife is nice, but pricey...but you really get a quality unit.
The OBX unit is a near clone. But at a third of the price, you get mixed results. Some people love them and they work perfectly. Others have problems that seem to center around axles binding in the diff. THis problem has been traced to an edge that should be beveled and isn't in some units. Others it is. So if the unit you get isn't, and you bother to get it beveled at a machine shop, its logical to assume it will work fine.

Yes, you can get a factory LSD in the ZC for the 2wd wagon....nothing for the 4wd that I've found. Problem with that factory ZC LSD is that:
(a)its RARE. Of the 25 or so ZC trannys I've seen, it was only in two. And thats when we were specifically looking/asking for ZC trannys with LSDs. While not scientifically irrefutable, that sampling works out to as less than 10% of the ZCs came with an OEM LSD.
(b)its a clutch style, not the gear type typically found in all the other Hondas. It needs a rebuild over time. Of the two, one was shot and the second could have used some recondtioning. Unfortunately, the rebuild kit is not available in the US.
(c)it can be installed in a usdm tranny, its just not easy. And it will require moving to an intermediate shaft and bigger axles. Its usually easier just to run the ZC tranny it came in.

On a related note, we did get one ZC tranny with an aftermarket LSD already installed in it. As near as I can figure, its a Kaaz but I'm not positive.

Theres an OEM unit and also a Mugen unit, they are different... King Motorsports in the US are an official Mugen reseller so you may be able to order one.
Mugen still list their EF3/7 1.5way Sports LSD:

    41000-XE5-K0G0
    JDM RRP NZ$1398 including Tax.

    Thats $922.17 USD..

As to weather or not it is hellical or mechanical, i am unsure. Oh yeah and i'd trust a Mugen product in my Honda over any other aftermarket one... regardless of weather it was hellical or not.. :D
  • Good distinction.
King Motorsports has a 2way listed for $1122 (eek!) and some other options for $330.
Given the spotty availability, extremely rare nature of the Mugen stuff, the fact that it will eventually need a rebuild and not to mention price...I'd take the Quaife.

The 2-way is usually for the EF8/9 - i.e. the B16a... Mugen didn't make a 2-way for the ZC to my knowledge..

As to the differences between OE and Mugen... fark knows! lol! :P
  • I don't know...at King, it lists:

    "Limited-Slip Differential CRX 1988-1991 ZC 2-Way [41000-XE5-K0G0]"

So whatever that is...probably would be best to call them if someone were serious.

That part number is the 1.5 way LSD... one sec and i'll find the 2-way....

    Note that 41000-XE9-K0G0 is Mugen's EF8/9 2way Sports LSD.
    41000-XE5-K0G0 is their EF3/7 1.5way Sports LSD.

The OBX unit is a clone of the Quaife. Weve got 2+ autox seasons on ours in a B-series hatch that forced and has 242hp/241trq with absolutly zero problems, and we arnet nice to that car. Theres been numorous days where the car has had four drivers, and we typically get 8 30-50 second runs.

Now the problem is, OBX has never had an LSD for the d-series. I know they list one, but everytime Ive tried to order one, they are out of stock and never know when they will have another, so dont hold your breath on an OBX unit.

Davens mentioned that some people are having issues. First Ive heard any negative feedback on the OBX LSD. All B-series I assume?

Just ordered a LSD for a customer and they told me that they have the D-series LSD's in stock. Just an FYI ;)
