anyone know how to prep a wrinkle valve cover to...

well i got the valve cover wrinkle painted but i wanted to make specific parts on the cover to have the aluminum show. such as the H, round holes, or even the small openings. the place who did the paint painted everything and left me the duty of making it special, by highlighting the areas i want.

so, what tools will i need and whats the procedure?
i am worring that when i bring out the letters i may make the paint crack as i am working on it. any advice on that will help as well.

just use sand paper to sand it away. that shouldnt crack the paint. use an sanding block with rounded edges, that always worked well for me all the times i've sanded VCs. ;) hope this helps.

i used a drill with one of those round sander connector things.

took about 5 minutes and worked fine.

do you have a pic of your tools setup?
  • michaelhinkle1michaelhinkle1 Senior Wagonist
    any regular drill.

you can buy the attatchment at walmart man, and the sanding pads are round and are sticky on one side.

you'll know what to get when you see it, it's common sense.

the attatchment is around 4$ and the sanding pads are around 3$, if you have a drill which im sure you do then you're good to go.

my letters ended up looking like below, i sorta rushed, it could look better if you have paitence, which i dont.

i have 2 things to say.

    1. thank you for your reply and your help in this. it does help out any explaination over the internet with pics. i do appriciate your main intent which is to help out. for some of us it may not be as clear as to what you are stating. that is why we ask.

    2. i ask because there maybe other others who may wonder but who may feel they could be bashed for asking. as for me i always need pics to go along with any instructions. call me slow, but i dont want to mess up a pefectly good paint job.

again thank you. if you happen to have pics of the tool setup that would be cool.

*when you said drill i was also thinking of using a dremel. some have called it a drill to. and since its sanding or fine polishing i have not seen anyone use an actual drill. so this is interesting to see.*

basically you can get drill bits shaped like a cone, but its covered in sand "paper". its pretty cool.

id still just stick with regular hand held sand paper as it would be easier to control and keep even.

nice, ill check that out today at homedepot. most likely ill get a few different grit hand sand paper. if it looks better at the end, ill just take the time to do it by hand.

ill try to take some pics of the progress.
my camera is starting to suck bad. the camera itself works great. the original battery isnt. the camera has devalued so much that the oem battery cost as much as the whole camera and accessories.
i tried aftermarket batteries and they suck soo bad.

aircraft stripper and a wire brush.
  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
he doesnt wanna strip all the paint Doodle mah noodle, just scrape away the paint from the logo/lettering.

    or so it sounds.

yeah. today i used what i had in the garage first.
it actually looks kinda cool with the red lettering.

what i did do was clear out the four holes for the spark plug wires.

these are pics of me just starting on the spark plug holes.
i may or may not do the letters. the red letters are starting to grow on me.

wow that looks really good! well, install it on your car with the red letters and see if you like it. if not in time you can always sand it away :P

    thanks bro, :P

man i am tired. i did the sanding mostly by hand and i didnt tape off any sections. so i had to take it really slow and steady.

it looks good to me so far so i may not do anymore then this.

the only other thing i would probably do is the round outter part of the spark plug lips.
it might look better if i sand those. just not sure if the plug wire coupling would mess those up at all anyways.

i think my dog aproves of it so far

wrap some fine sandpaper on a block and sand
  • michaelhinkle1michaelhinkle1 Senior Wagonist
i'd paint the tops of the letters black, itit'd be "styleish" and match the other black parts in your bay.
  • mejtemejte Band Wagon
    damn, that thing looks good!

sand the paint off the letters and let them shine
  • TIMELESSWHITETIMELESSWHITE Senior Wagonist

ok since you all recommend to sand the letters and words, this would be the max. :D

i am totally new at this and im lucky so far as to not mess up the other areas. i dont want to press my luck. hahahaa

so here it is. the final product. what you all think :?:

excuse the language, but hot damn that looks so much better

what grit did you sand the letters with?
  • 949949 Senior Wagonist
    thanks my wagoneer brothaa!

well i started with 160 grit then used a 360 then a 400 grit to refine it down.

400 was the lowest i could find at "Home of De Pot" ...

almost messed it up a few times cause the ole hand was getting tired. there was slippage but the tape i used to cover the areas around the sanding spots covered me a few times. there were taped spots that i didnt notice was wearing out cause of the protection it was doing. i almost went down on some spots. lucky i did it slow enough to catch it.

"They say i have a slow and steady hand." hehehehe
