i spraying engine degreaser on the outside and in the bell housing area. anything else i should to do some maintenance since i have it out?

not sure if i need to regrease anything either.

its a 91 wagon 4wd tranny.

you might as well change the tranny oil.

use a pressure washer on the outside of the tranny, it will make the aluminum sparkle

pretty sure nothing has to be really lubed up either...

yup oil is drained as it needed to be removed prior to taking out the axles.

i forgot which bolt is the refiller. i found the drainer easily but the refiller bolt eludes me while its at a different angle all alone on the floor.

best way to clean it up is with a wire brush. not too coarse or else you cant get in all the little spots.

Use high temp grease on the shaft with the splines. and on the throwout bearing. Do not use brake cleaner on the throwout bearing.

oh crap. i did use brake cleaner as that was the only thing i had at the time. it was the only strongest thing i had on hand.
i didnt really concentrate it on that but just everywhere as there was crud on everything.
hmmm i like the word 'crud'. sounds fun 'crudduuuuullllouuussss' hahaha

    oh well..
what do i do now about the throw out bearing?
did i damage it from no return?
is there a way to fix it?
the tranny will be off for about a week or so more

I'd buy a new throwout bearing regardless.

Most people pulling tranies back off from recently doing a tranny/clutch job have to do so because of a bad/not lubed properly throwout bearing.

It's a $20-$50.00 part that could save you a full day's worth of trouble having to repull it and still buy another throwout bearing anyways.

    ;)

    will any throwout bearing work?
this one came with the exedy clutch i got in there only about 10 months ago.

so it isnt really old or even used much yet.

what is the proper way of greasing it up?

yeah. i was just thinking i should just get a new throw out bearing since they are about 60-70 bucks. i cant seem to find a better price on the japan oem parts.

the part number i need is 22810-ph8-008.

i was curious if the exedy clutch i got came with the correct throwout bearing?
the reason i say this is because they didnt have a clutch that was wagon specific.

    ^^^^What he said!!

To clean mine, I used degreaser to get the big chunks and most of the grime. Too shine it up I use Eagleone etching aluminum mag cleaner. It works awesome on trannies and blocks, just dont breath in the fumes. It will burn/singe your lungs and that hurts.

    is this what you used?

because it said "Not for use on clear-coated or polished aluminum wheels"
    and the tranny is aluminum.

which exact part are you talking about?

    that link shows many products.
  • 949949 Senior Wagonist
well so far i used the eagleone etching mag cleaner. it left the tranny with some white residue. i also used some brake cleaner only on the parts where grease or hard grim was still on there.

How'd you get the tranny cover/inspection plate off? my wagon is on jack stands until I furuge this out.

I have every bolt of the engine, but it's still stuck together down there.

Where the rear drive shaft bolts up, that housing that covers part of that inspection cover, do I remove that as well? I took one bolt out and oil started spurting out so I put it back in real quick. but now that the trans is sitting sidways in the engine bay, all the oil as already poured out, onto my floor.

So How do I get the tranny off the goddam engine!

im not sure of all the names of the parts but the tranny is held on by very long bolts. once the bolts are off, you will need to slide it out very straight. it really helps if you have 2 other friends to help you with this. i had two other guys with me and it was on a cherry picker.
