Oil Catch Can - Which Way?

OK so i've searched this topic on a number of forums and i never seem to get a good solid response.

I want to install an oil catch can and i know theres two different places i could possibly install it.

a) the head outlet on the left back side of the valve cover - this normally has a line going to the intake tube. I always thought that you needed to have some pressure being taken out of the head using this line but i have seen people just putting a small filter onto the exit from the valve cover... is this OK or are they letting hot air build up inside the head?

b) PCV valve... I'm just clueless with this one. I know where the valve is and i have a replacement valve for my car, but i have no idea what way to setup the catch can on this. Some people have removed the valve altogether, some haven't bothered with return lines etc.
I just don't want to do any damage to my engine by not ventilating the gasses correctly... does anyone have any specific instructions they can give me?

Thanks, much appreciated..

EDIT: PCV valve part number is 17130-PM6-003 and i'm running a DOHC ZC

just curious...have you bought the catch can yet?

im mentioning this because my uncle owns a machine show out in Bryan, Texas....and he makes oil catch cans for cars. its not really his big thing, but he makes them on the side. he has personally enginnered them to be better than whatever you can find on the market right now. easy to clean, better flow, a specially engineered clip that makes installation easy!

    kinda crappy pics....

hehe yup already purchased the can a while ago, havn't been game to hook it up until i know for sure which was is best.
  • Here's an installation how-to:

And here's another (I think this one is even relatively local to you Pacifier):

OK now i've actually read both of those before but they dont address my main concerns...

    a) my oil catch cab has a breather... wouldn't this mean that theres no vacuum?

    b) i've seen another writeup that has the pcv leading into the catch can, and then the valve cover ventilation also goes to the can and the hole in the intake manifold is plugged up along with the hole in the intake tube..
again wouldn't this mean there is no vacuum?

Putting a catch can in is all well and good but im just not sure if the methods people use are safe? :?
  • Oh. Well, that's all I can recommend...I've never gotten the impression that the catch can was worth the trouble (so I haven't done a lot of research).

Your catch can has one inlet(valve checked) and one outlet (or vent)?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say, leave the PCV in place but instead of running into the intake manifold, run it into the catch can.
Same with the valve cover breather tube. Since you've only got one inlet, you could put a three way splitter or t-connector

This way, it will catch any oil that would have routed back into the intake manifold. I'm guessing the vent keeps the can pressure atmospheric so any positive pressure in th e engine will flow that direction.

Of course, this is based on my B18b, so it might be a little different for other setups. AND I'm completely talking out of my ass. I have nothing concrete to base this on...just observation and speculation.

How you described it is how i was thinking of setting it up in the first place... yeah my catch can actually has two entrances plus the breather, so three ports, so that setup would work... i'll try and have a look around and if i find the answer i will post up in case anyone else does this.
  • so, I'll ask what might be a stupid question;
exactly what is the purpose of a catch can?
is it to keep oil that has passed the PCV valve from getting back into the fuel/airflow stream inside the intake maifold?

cause I gotta say THAT is a real pain in the ass. had plenty 'o problems with that on our '98 Tacoma.

Yep, your pretty much spot on.

I checked my throttle body one day and noticed a little bit had built up so i'm taking precautionary measures.
