Windshield Washer

I replaced the hood on my 89 wagon a few years ago and the washer squirts the cleaning fluid too low on the windshield to clean the upper areas properly. I tried to move the nozzle thing by sticking a paperclip into it, but it won't move. I didn't want to break anything, so I didn't try to force it. Is this a good way to do this? Any suggestions?

  • If a paper clip will fit into the nozzle itself you should be ok I used to use a mechanics pick somewhat similar looking to what you would see in a dentists office because it was a little stronger. Usually wax builds up on the metal portion of the nozzle so they can be a little stubborn to move at first. Also if you happen to have access to compressed air with a rubber tipped air chuck you can blow air into the nozzle while someone squirts it from inside this will help clear the nozzle if the flow seems weak, if the flow is ok then adjusting it is probably all you need. The usual place these will break is where the washer hoses attach to the nozzle underneath the hood if you decide to remove them. The plastic ends there can get weak and snap when you try and remove the hose. Sometimes this is necessary to really clean them if shooting air through the outside portion of the nozzle itself doesn't work or if the check valves get clogged.

Anyway hope this helps you should be fine if you can get enough leverage with a paper clip and it doesn't break off in the nozzle  .
Part of our LOF was to adjust the nozzle's so I can say this method has been tested repeatedly  .

Thanks. Where are the check valves?

when you replaced the hood did you replace the nozzles or use the ones already on the hood? or the ones from the previous hood, did they work fine before?

it could just be that the nozzles off the current hood (assuming you didnt change them) are old and clogged full of crap, buy new ones they're not much and probably need changing anyways.

I used the ones that came with the hood from the junkyard. I didn't know they could be easily replaced? You're talking about the chrome jobs that sit ontop of the hood, right? How do you change/clean them?

im speaking of the little injecter on top of the hood that sprays the fluid.

the nozzles take maybe 3 seconds to remove. they are held in place by a "clip".

pop your hood open and look at the bottom of the nozzles. squeeze the two black plastic bits underneath (kinda like a clip), push up and the entire assembly will come out (from the top of the hood).

you have to unplug the hoses, of course.. haha.
