Low ratio transmission

Hey everybody,
I just started really working on my wagon for the first time, doing a clutch replacement. Now that I know how easy it is to get the transmission off, I want to replace it because its worn out as hell and I don't want to mess with rebuilding it (don't know what I'm doing and don't have the time to figure it out, its my daily driver).
I've been searching and reading on the forum but it all seems kind of confusing as far as transmissions go. I have a 1990 5spd wagon, and I see that it has a pretty low ratio transmission, how easy would it be for me to find the same transmission as I have, and what exactly would this transmission be called? I really need to replace this thing soon, but I couldnt live with myself if I put another transmission in that is geared more for fuel economy than "hauling stuff."
please help a n00b!

if its 2WD you can use any 88-91 Civic tranny...
if its 4WD (and you want to keep the 4WD) you can only use a 4WD tranny.
the 2WD wagon trannies were actually really good, better then a regular DX and whatnot. it can be tricky to find them though, as the wagon is becoming quite rare.
Anybody know if you can just swap out the final drive gear in any of these transmissions?
