Noise with RT4WD drivetrain

I have a 1988 RT4WD wagon with the manual transmission. I recently reinstalled the rear motor mount bracket with no problems. I am now getting a loud noise that sounds like the drive shaft is being struck by a hammer. The noise occurs when the car is moving: running or not, in gear or not, at any speed, but only in 4WD. It only makes the noise once about every 500 feet traveled. Is it possible that the motor mount bracket is not aligned properly (this motor mount is mounted directly to the transmission)? It wasn't making the noise prior to this, but I had gone a while driving it in 2WD. Can anyone point me in the right direction here?

    bad u joint
  • Take your driveshaft down and check the ujoints. Very common problem.
  • thanks for the help. this is my first wagon. not too rusty for a Jersey car.
  • The 4WD engagement lever was not fully in position. I rolled the car back and forth a couple of times (like the manual says to) and it worked. U-joints are fine. Now if I can just get those springs installed....
