turbo vs mini me

im trying to plot the road i will take. i did a d16y7 swap and now i am trying to decide between a turbo or a mini-me swap and some bolt ons. i am not going to put a shit pot of money in my engine, i just want it to be fun AND reliable.

if anyone has done either or both of these i would appreciate general opinions about the performance of both options.

tanks.

i would boost it. the y7 isnt vtec already? what does it come out of?
  • y7 is the 96-00 dx, lx, etc. nonvtec motor. Have you ever driven a d16y8 or d16z6 powered car? Its not a very noticeable difference. Turbo will give way more power and fun imo.

yo dude im planning the same. arikaboy was telling me it would a little complicate for the compression but its deff possible. im tryin to use the y8 head cause i heard that it will fit right in w the a6 block. here is a link about this guys w an a6 block and y8 head tryin to get up to 400 hp http://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=2268833&postid=33315925
  • Turbo FTW.
If you were over here I'd suggest sticking a DOHC AC in first, but they are likely to be a lot more over there right ?

in order to get the turbo to be reliable you'll have to spend some cash on tuning. i would say turbo but it isn't going to be exactly cheap.

i am pretty sure i have a hookup on the tuning :D

just not on the parts or installation....

it's a bit more technical then just bolting a turbo on a stock engine.....

As long as you understand that the Y series blocks have problems developing rod knocks even when bone stock then go for it, I guess.

Honestly I'd try to source a D16A6 block, or if not at least a D16Z6.

In the 13 or so years I've worked with Hondas I have seen WAAAAY more rod knocking 96-00 Civic D series engines than all other 1988-1995 D engines combined. I think there is a design flaw with the D16Y7/8 in terms of oiling. Ask anyone who has worked on Hondas for over 10 years and they'd probably agree that they replace more 96-00 D engines than any other D engine.

so what engine build would you go with? i was looking at the durbo d16 because the engine was inexpensive and the turbo kit is too. i figure if i keep the boost moderate to low i could have a lot of fun.

would love to hear your thoughts on a better option... i am open to suggestions at this point.
