engine heatshield

you know that cheap, crappy, rusted thing behind the radiator and in front of the engine you have to sweet talk to get the blamed dipstick back down through... I noticed on a pic of B18CWagon's white 'race wagon' that his is missing.

is there a really good reason I shouldn't whip mine outta there? it's a daily driver and doesn't have any problems with the cooling system. at least not anymore.

I know, I know... things are engineered for a really good reason. except when sometimes they're not, ya know? if I pull it what kinda foul problems can I expect? anyone?

any and all helpful info is appreciated!

"heat shield" its gonna block the heat coming off the exhaust manifold. if you take that sucker off....you'll be sucking in the hott air being exposed into the engine bay from that manifold. usually when people put an aftermarket header on there, it'll be wrapped in something to absorb some of that heat. if you got a stock engine....theres really no reason to take it off. if you do, you'll just be looking at a rusty exhaust manifold.

i say leave it on....but that's just my two cents

Unless you use a cold-air intake or an intake setup with a cold-air box and cold-air feed and raise the back of the bonnet up, i wouldn't do it..

you could always take it off and get it repainted in heat resistant paint?
  • On a couple of my setups (DOHC ZC motors) I would resuse the stock ZC manifold as it flowed really well from go.

I would eaither leave it off (never seemsed to make that much a diffrence) or Pull it off, and respay it with a silver coat of paint just to clean it up at a little. For the paint, make sure you use somthing that will stand the heat!

  • get some headers on your wagon and you can take that ugly heat shield off.
i found some used DC Sports headers for the 88-91 Civic for $50 bucks last week, but someone else got to it before i did..i was going chrome it out and keep it as an extra piece.

  • that said, it's okay to go with headers w/o a new intake first, right?
I mean, I'd like to have both but you can do one w/o the other?

When you say intake do you mean the filter and tube or the manifold and throttle body?

It should be fine to only do the header and then do the filter etc. later on.. For best results, once you have the intake and maybe another power-adder, get it tuned on a dyno.
  • sorry, yeah. to me 'intake' means the manifold & throttle body. I figger it's def OK to put a different filter and tube on no matter what... as long as the diameters match on all the parts and it's sealed/gasketed properly.

OK now heres the thing, if you put a larger bore throttle body on and a larger intake manifold you could actually lose power if you don't do a bit of head work i.e. cams, springs, valves and maybe a port.

I belive it is flow vs. velocity...

For each mod you'll need to have the car tuned if you want the best results..
