AWD wagon moves when parked in gear...bad clutch?

I just recently built a new motor for the wagon. At the time, I resurfaced the flywheel, put a brand new clutch disk and a slightly used pressure plate in...along with a brand new throwout bearing.

Now when I park on an incline (even a small incline), turn the car off and leave it in first gear, the car will very slowly creep down the incline. The engine is NOT turning over while the car is moving, but the transmission must be moving because the axles and wheels are rotating.

Does this mean my clutch is bad? Bad gearbox?

I tried 5th gear pulls at low rpm and the clutch holds fine but the motor is a only a stockish z6.

yes. major vibrations in the rear. but I don't think they are related.
  • I have heard from a few people that their cars creep on inclines but most say this isn't normal.

Does the clutch feel like it is slipping when you are driving?

Maybe you can adjust the cable a little bit and see if that helps.

    cable adjustment does nothing.

clutch does not slip while driving.

I think the gears inside the gearbox are slipping.
  • How can gears slip inside of transmission :?:
Do you hear cluncking when veh is moving while parked?
One way veh can roll is when there is loss of conection between engine and transmission meaning clutch out of adjustment or incorrect installation!
    I donno dude...somethings smells fishy here!!! 8)
  • You have pretty much ruled out the motor since you say it was a fresh rebuild and the motor isn't turning over. If your engine compression is low that could also cause a car to creep.

If it isn't slipping when driving, you don't hear any terrible noises from the tranny, and your motor is pulling strong, I would just start yanking that parking brake and not worry about it.

You are making me wonder if my wagon does the same thing. We have a pretty steep driveway leading into the basement garage. I will have to check this out later today.
  • FRONT AXLE HAD POPPED OUT OF THE GEARBOX!!!!

All three problems are now gone.

    1. When the car is turned off and left in gear, it will roll if I am on any sort of incline....even a very small incline. It rolls at a very slow and steady pace. The engine is NOT turning over while it rolls. I do not believe the clutch to be slipping because it is new and does not slip when driving. To me, this suggests that gears inside the gearbox are slipping.

Open front diff was just turning because there was only one front axle in the gearbox. Clutch is mint.

    2. Crazy vibrations from the rear in second gear. I thought that one of the U-joints from the driveshaft had failed (this happens frequently) but upon inspection, they were all good. Could be a viscous coupler issue or maybe the rear diff mounts are rediculously worn.

The wagon has been RWD for the past two weeks. All the power that should have been going to the front was going to the side with no axle (open diff)

    3. The AWD transmission has the option to be in 2 or 4 wheel drive. There is a lever on the transmission that allows you to switch. The lever worked great on my first transmission. On this one, it works fine in 4wd, but when I switch the lever to 2wd and then go to drive the car, I have NO GEARS. Let the clutch out and it is as if I am in neutral.

The gearbox was functioning properly the whole time. When I switched it to 2 wheel drive, I had gears, they just couldn't send power to the ground because of the open diff

    LOL!
  • Good to hear it wasn't something major.
