RT4WD Axle Removal Problem

Can't seem to get out the driver side axle, passenger side was no problem. Any tips or tricks? Do I need to do anything different on the drivers side then the passenger side? Thanks.

  • Should be the same for both sides. I used a crow bar to slip in between the tranny and the axle to pop that clip loose. No problems on either of the wagons I had.

try getting a long punch or something long and solid (no pun intended) and from the pasenger side hit it realy hard. if u cant get it out that way i'd say just remove the 3 14mm bolts holding the half shaft onto the motor and see if u can get it out of the tranny then u might be able to get the whole unit apart when its out of the car.

Thanks! Needed to remove the halfshaft bolts

WA represent! Seems like alot of WA people with wagons on here. SRP in has EE wagon days in Auburn...kind of a drive but maybe in the summer you could come out 8)
  • 05m0515,

Out of curiosity, where did you get your replacement driver's side CV Axle? Do you also have a parts number? I've been having a hell of a time trying to get the right one for my wagon. I think I finally found a parts store that can get the right one. Thanks!

I no longer own a wagon i sold mine this week to my friend but i still stop by here everyday lots of cool peeps on here.
  • Would it be too late to ask you to take pics and measurements of your driver's side axle while it's out? If it's too late, that's okay. I'm sending you a PM too.
  • Progress, go to carquest. They can get them(driver side front RT4wd axles, that is). Make sure you ask to see if they can get brand new axles because I got three remans and the outer joints were super tight in all of them. They gave me a new one that cost $30 more and it is perfect.

The new axle cost $101.29. It's part number is WPC K400030531EMP.

The reman cost 72.75 and the part number is RDS 8101.

^^This is what it says on my receipts but you probably want to check to make sure these are for the correct application before you order them. I don't know why it wouldn't be the same, but you never know.
  • Both of my axles need replacing and I just ordered both sides from www.rockauto.com last week. I've gotten parts from them before and they were always good. The axles should be here tomorrow and once they are installed I'll give an update on how they fit.

    GSP Part # NCV36042
Right; Front; 4WD; Torque Spec: 134 ft. lbs; Wrench Size: 32mm
    $60.79
    GSP Part # NCV36051
Left; Front; 4WD; Torque Spec: 134 ft. lbs; Wrench Size: 32mm
    $60.79

I searched their site and came to the following concern:

The parts you listed are under the 1988 & 1989 D16A6 CIVIC 4WD cars but not under the 1990 & 1991 D16A6 CIVIC 4WD cars. Would these axles be interchangeable since it's the same engine or were the D16A6 different by year? If so, why don't they have these same parts listed in the 1990 & 1991 sections? Weird. Maybe I'll just give them a call
    and find out myself.

Thanks for the info though! I may have the correct axle coming from Carquest today or tomorrow.
