Auto trans trouble

I have a 91 rt4wd with an auto trans. Recently it has a delayed shifting problem. Mostly in lower gears. From a stop it will accelerate and rev up to over 4K before it will shift. Also, when slowing down from higher speeds, the engine revs up and down until I come to a stop. I just replaced the iacv and it didn't change much at all. Any help would be great. This is my daily and I drive 100 miles a day so I need to get it fixed

I would say start with a trans flush and track down some auto fluid that people have raved about. For fluids I am no help here as I have always had manual.

However curiously, I do have a 91 auto RT4wd trans that I will be selling. It was my fathers and has 133k miles on. Shifts perfectly. Keep it in mind!

Thanks for the input. My wagon just hit 150k today so it's not terribly high mileage. Hoping nothing major is going on
  • I don't know too much about the AT trans but I would say flush would be my first thought as well. There is also an AT control module under the drivers seat. I'm not sure what it controls but it could be another potential culprit. I sold mine to someone on the board when I did my swap, so I'll try to dig up that thread to find out what his issue was.
  • I PM'd vrmousey and asked if he could shed light on his issue. Hopefully he chimes in.

Thank you. Ive got new fluid in now and already replaced the IACV a couple days ago. Its a little better but still doing the same thing.

It is entirely possible that the issue is in the module, however obviously you want to check the simple things like fluid and making sure that you're not slipping in every gear or is it just out of like first into second. The only first into second would at that point sound like bad friction Rings or something in a basket internal to the tranny. Another big important thing to check is the kickdown linkage that goes from the gas pedal and it connects to the transmission on the automatic. That one generally doesn't get touched unless the transmission has been removed from the vehicle. Another inexpensive thing to check because of the fact that the Hondas have external solenoid for shifting gears would be to remove the solenoids from the transmission check the screens at the solenoids and verify operation of those solenoids then it's cool putting it back together to get new gaskets and know that you're not leaking there.

Thank you for all that info. I was wondering if the solenoids could be the culprit. I think I will check those next
  • If all the gears have a higher shift point, I would be looking at the TV (throttle valve) cable which actually controls the shift points. If it is too tight, the shift points will be high.

Ill check that out. It is something that started a couple months ago tho and did not used to do it.
