what size wheels should i get?

wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
ok im looking into getting sportmax 501 rims soon because my friend is buying my Spuns.. anyways, my choices are:

16x8 et15
15x8 et15
15x7 et38

my original plan was to get 15x7 up front and 15x8 rear. but i sorta kinda think the 15s would look a little small and i was wanting to go 16x8 all around but then i would prolly rub a LOT and i do a lot of city driving and such. then i though maybe just get 15x8 all around.. but there is still that rub issue up front.. so what should i do.. get staggered wheels or what?

do you think the staggered would look nice or goofy or...?

also just how much rubbing would i experience with et15 rims...

-cheers

    15x7 et38
Then sack it on its arse.
  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
i dont wanna sack it cause i haul people a lot

also savannah has some terrible dips and drops on its roads. 15x7 seems logical except the whole reason i want these is for the massive lip, at least on the rear

  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
yeah and its more driveable fo sho

ok dudes so i have decided on the 16x8's.... now im kinda lost with tires. well, not reall lost but anyways, should i get 40-series rubber or 45? can 40-series even be stretched? if i get 40-series it would be 205/40/16.

45 would be better for driving though, but is that too much rubber? questions questions...

According to http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html , you'd need a 185/45/16 to match the overall diameter of your stock wheels. I've never even heard of that size. 205/40/16 or 215/40/16 are more likely to exist, and both are within 1% of your stock diameter.

    15s - 195/50/15

And none of this low offset bullshit.

    Low offset is the shit~

err i hate these decisions. i wish i could afford both sizes then just see which is better

does anyone on here have 16's? i know disfunctionEF has 16" sportmax 002 on his, and they just barely cram in there... blahhh if i get the 15's i'll prolly have to lower my car some to make them look better.

    did you roll the fenders?
    this process helps a ton.

you can get a really good sense if you also did some measurements.
i had to figure out what would fit when i ordered my rims last year. pretty hard to think about it now but it was worth the time.
after that i became very good at measuring where a good rim will be at and how big i can get it to sit under the fender or even get very close.

for you, things you need to know to get started.
how does your current wheel look?
what do you want it too look like on your next wheel from this one.
why?,with the current one you have it gives you a starting point.
usually for the first timmer and novice i recommend find a rim that is at least the right diameter you want to get so you can test it out. it will relieve 1 variable from the three. it lets you see it visually and makes it easier.
    the three variables are
    diam,
    width,
    offset.

ill do a small techno-babble on it. later on.
i corrected a magazine once on it. VW 'something' in the title.
it was funny cause when i wrote to them about the the mistake they said the writer must have been drinking that day.

yeah i will roll the fenders once i get the wheels.

man this is such a hard decision, haha... somedays im totally convinced about the 16s, then somedays i am like "naw, that might not work so much..." then i want the 15s. meh. i like the look of the 16s a lot more.. but the price and comfort of the 15s. idk.

    .... :?

im now rolling on 17 and 18.
the ride is not bad at all. just dont go with too high of performance tires and your fine.
im using nitto neo gens. very good feel for the daily rider

if i do get the 16s, you think 45 rubber would be too much? i know 50 would, and 40 is too thin for my taste, so yeah.. would 45 still be too thick?
  • My wife never complained about the ride on the 215/40/16's. She isn't that picky though either :?

There are some pretty crappy roads on her drive to work too.
  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
im not very picky, but i still want it to be half-decent... and there are some pretty damn huge potholes in my area, haha... whoever said that Southern roads are better was on crack.

    Problem Solved....
Go 16x8 zero offset and roll your fenders.......GAME OVER!!!!

  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
that is the picture i look at every single day  0 offset is way too much for me though.

oh dude, i believe they have those in 5-lug... no?
  • NJCIVICWAGON1NJCIVICWAGON1 Council Member

Would you be interested in a 4x114 setup? You know the wheel selection for that lug offset is off the chart! I can get that done for you cheap.
  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
naw i was just messing. i mean, maybe... waaaay down, i'll get the 5-lug. but this is of course after i have done an engine swap, got my SC, and converted to CR-V 4WD.... anywho though. i'm fine with the wheel choices so far available for 4x100, as i am still a broke car junkie
