1990 4wd auto 1st gear choppy....

I have zero experience with transmissions but I am not afraid to turn a wrench. When starting out, first gear is very choppy and seems to miss. Every other gear after is fine. Any thoughts or suggestions?

    Choppy? Seems to miss? Like the converter is slipping or...?

    First place to start is fluid, then the solenoids.

    Thank you. Will go from there. Can I get to the solenoids without removing the transmission?
