'91 Wagon rt4wd Rear Differential Dampner, are new replacements available?

Hello there, In the process of redoing the driveshaft on my '91 rt4wd wagon. Hopefully the last car I will ever own.
At 240ki mi w/ dealer rebuild engine at 190k. I was having the dealer do all the maintenance, but parts availability and cost have sent me to a good Honda-specific mechanic.
It needs a "Differential Dampner" in the rear, and we cannot locate a new one anywhere. I found a couple used ones, but not in very good shape.
Also, The first attempt at driveshaft rebuild lasted 50miles, rebuilt using my core and another core to make one. It started binding and viscous coupler area super-hot. Any info on how to rebuild correctly? Shaft was rebuilt by a reputable driveshaft only guy, but not a Honda-specific rebuilder.
Or was the failed Dampner possibly casing stress on the shaft?
Any help will be appreciated, no rush, car on the road, and shaft back at the rebuilders.

  • Which part are you looking for: #5?

There is a VC rebuild thread and other good info on the driveshaft and rear end of the car in the Engine and Transmission sticky post: https://www.civicwagon.com/showthread.php?17828-Engine-amp-Drivetrain-Quicklinks
  • I believe #9 or #10...I am in the same situation.
  • I found two of the #5 OEM Honda part on Amazon. Also found easy access for aftermarket #10.
The #9 no longer exists in this country or Japan.
My Honda guy is pretty good, we have ordered the CR-V dampner, p/n50716-SR7-J00. Looks really close, maybe able fit it, or modify/poach parts. Any advice out there on this?
    TY for link on driveline.
I will keep you all updated on the progress.
  • Binding and heating of the VC suggest mismatched tires, front to rear. STE Couplers, viscous coupler rebuilders, state that tires must be matched within 3/16 in. circumference. If the tires are not matched, disengage the rear wheel drive until you can replace them.

It is also entirely possible that the rear upper bushes are shot, not just the rear one. If there was enough movement then there might be enough pressure to cause the heat. Check this out: https://www.civicwagon.com/showthread.php?9589-Rear-diff-bushing-mod-get-rid-of-that-quot-thud-quot-sound

The crv one fit there as well, i just replaced those in the spring.
  • Thanks to all, sorry for slow response. Had to actually shovel the driveway since I am down to 2wd. The neighbors were like "Your stuck?, we have never seen that car stuck, whats wrong?"
So Right On! Yes, I used the CRV pn50716-SR7-J00. I used the Honda OE part for 129, but saw 'em Febesat on Amazon for m35 w free shipping. went in perfectly. Slightly beefier rubber piece, looks and works good.
My tires were 185 on front, and 195 on rear, probably a good part of the problem. But not only was it hot, the end caps looked "blown out", like from excessive fluid, rebuilder of the shaft admitted he had never rebuilt one, and didn't do viscous coupler correct after showing him MrWhoopes and another rebuild article. And the Honda Service manual page RE: viscous coupler, something along the lines of "Do not take this apart ever, there are no user serviceable parts inside", (it reminded me of when VaccumTubes went solid state, and the stereos were stamped "No user serviceable parts inside").
We found a good used VC w about 130kMi, and replaced the funny one.
Replaced rear bushings (#5's) , and the bushing next to the dampner (#10). Found OEM on the #5's but had to go w FeBest on the #10. The upper bushings Looked OK, but this spring when 'shaft comes back out, will replace those as well, using the above info from Hayden. "I thought the THUD was how you knew the 4wd system was working, lol"
The Febest stuff looks OK. Wont make it 240kMi like the OE, but I cant see how you can sell anything for $21 with free shipping. I bet the box and freight cost them more than the part. At least there around.
Four new tires today, studded 185/70/R14.
Driving really nice now, gonna take some pics tomorrow when I really test the 4wd system.
Thanks again to all for your help. Great to find you folks.
