Installed custom exhuast on 1991 RTAWD Wagon

Sorry if this isn't the right place to put this I just wanted to share my experience of getting a modified exhaust put on my 1991 RTAWD civic wagon. I ended up using the axle back portion from a 91 ef hatch back. As a FYI the hangers had to be cut and new ones had to be welded to the muffler in order for it to hang correctly. Also we had to shorten the back section of piping to make it fit correctly, I am talking about the portion by the LCA. All that I added in line was a thursh resonator, just like a cherry bomb. She is a bit loud but I like it. Just thought id share my experience since this topic comes up quite often. After the pictures are a link to what it sounds like. Every other D series with a exhaust. haha its a stock d16a6 btw.

  • I'd say this should just go in your build thread. Not really anything technical about it. Maybe if it were more step by step on just what had to be shortened, with photos along the way. I can move it as you like.

Otherwise this is just standard build thread fare.

Regarding the exhaust itself, where's the flex joint located at on yours?

I will say, that resonator looks familiar.

Ah that makes more sense. Yeah sorry I didn't get any more pics. Kinda wanted to throw it up to see what u can do with a ef axle back. On this setup there is no flex pipe.
  • Does it at least have a spring joint somewhere? Otherwise that's gonna be a leaky mofo in short order. When I replaced my exhaust it had over 6 separate leaks with one of them being a 180 degree crack at a joint as there was no flex allowed anywhere in the setup so it flexed at the weakened metal around the welds.

Yeah it currently has a spring joint where it connected to the resonator from the header. Funny you say that because its actually leaking there right now. haha. There is no doughnut gasket in there so I have to put on it. Oh well so far I like it but I might grow up and want to put a different muffler on it. Doubt it though.
  • O.k. cool, yeah the dimwits that did mine before I owned it installed no spring joint what so ever. Idiots.

Either way, I like your setup, sounds good. Though one thing to note, never film vertically.

im going cheap header, cut to a 4" flex, to a obd1 race cat, to vibrant bottle resonator, to vibrant ultra quiet resonator, and then straight out the back so i can skip the cross over part. Hoping it gets quiet enough to not draw attention and really hoping for no drone but we'll see. Should have the stuff in this week.
  • Sweet, get some pics and a sound clip up when you get it going. I went with thrush for the resonator as well as you can see, same one that the OP did as well. They have perforated core, vs cherry bombs which have the louvered core. Looks like the vibrants are perforated as well though, which is nice. I was gonna redo it in 3" when I get my turbo situation sorted out, but was having trouble finding the stainless version of the thrush resonator. Looks like vibrant might be easier to source on that, so I definitely look forward to seeing what you do.

I had to get a long bit of flex because the ill fitment of the header I put on. It doesn't tuck up under the oil pan as nicely as I'd care for it to. That said when I build my own downpipe and turbo manifold I plan on welding some stand offs and fabbing up a heat shield around the exhaust under the oil pan as well.

amazon is the cheapest place i could find it, which happened to be the fastest cheapest shipping with prime too. now that i got the ultraquiet in......its a bit short, and with the stubby cat there's plenty of room. So i think I'm going to throw one more longer bottle resonator at it too.

Over the past few days I I feel that the car has gotten a tad bit louder but with the amount of Honda Thefts in the past few weeks thats okay with me. Ill hear it start up. lol
