oh no's mr.bill! starting issues!!

history:
i recently picked up a 1990 hatch (for free) with 104k miles, in good condition but not running.

problem history:
1st problem (right after clicking over 100k miles) the car started acting odd, it would start fine, and as you would drive it. The car (with in a mile of driving) would "bog down" and lose all of its power. My friend (who I got the car from) had a local macanic switch out the fuel pump (for nothing shy of 900$...ouch). it solved the problem for roughly 4 days, then led to another problem....

2nd problem, will not start! however, the engine does turn over as if it wants. But it acts as if it's not getting any fuel. Now, my first thought was a bad fuel pump (still not sure, we think the person who switched them might have put in a "used" fuel pump) or distributer (again not sure). my brother worked on the car for about 2 hours. finding the the main relay was fine (it clicks??), but (i'm not sure what the code is) it may be flashing a code.
when he turns the key (to where the radio comes on) the ECU flashes once...and no more...just as soon as he turns the key...BLINK...and nothing more...

our guesses
1. Fuel pump
2. distributor
3. main relay
4. an act of God (telling me to screw the old engine, and put in a b16)

any help would be greatly welcomed!

    Re-solder the main fuel relay.
  • hmm, do you have any diagrams that could help out with that?
=\ i've never soldered before, but hey I'm willing to try.

if that becomes out of the question, where can i get a new "main relay?"
I've been looking on majestic honda, and I have been unsuccessful so far.

(completely off topic, and this does not change the main reason of the thread)

at the very bottom of the list, the "speaker kit" is that talking about the pod's that can be installed in the rear of the car??

im pretty sure its an act of God telling you to get a B16A. and wtf, i hope you were kidding when you said you paid $900 for a new fuel pump....

on a serious note, go to the Honda dealer for a new main relay. its like $41 or something. i had the same problem, where it would crank but not start and it ended up being a main relay. but you are saying yours "clicks"... ok so that leads me to this:

when you first put the key in the ignition to "on" to start the car and the check engine light goes off, that doesnt mean its not blinking at the ECU. only AFTER the car starts (which in your case it wont) will the check engine light come back on. what im saying is, go check your ecu for codes whether the check engine light is on or not.

It's almost certainly the main fuel relay from what you have described. If you are not confident with soldering then just buy a replacement from Honda.

And on the note of the fuel pump - a Walbro 255lph intank pump costs $200 NZD so what kindof super special pump did you get for $900 USD??!!

  • in response to the "uber fuel pump installation"......he got ripped a new one...
    ahem...yeah, big time.

I'm calling my brother right now on figuring out "exactly" what the car is doing. (the car is roughly two and half ours away from me at this point)

if any of you feel comfortable doing so, you can AIM me
    "MrWeum" is my Screen name
  • okay, here it is "the car ran fine for a couple of days, but then it started cutting out on parts of the road (same parts every day). then it started cutting out more and more, usually when the car sat for a little bit. And then we tried to drive it back to the macanic. and it cut out one final time, and has not started since." that was the most i could get out of my brother, other than the description above.
so, that is about all i can give you.
  • up date....not really shocking. i just liked that little face.

Well, I called my brother and he told me that he heard the fuel pump kick in. He also borrowed someones tools (he left his here at home oops), and popped off the distributor cap. He found oil inside of it (probably there from when the macanic installed it), I told him to go a head and pick one up.
Also, a friend of his in the car club. Told him that if it was the main relay, he could re solder it for us (for free!).

I'll give another update on things. Hopefully by next weekend we'll have this baby up and running. and she'll be in my eager little hands to get her to the body shop (fix the front fender) and wham. i have a ment little hatch on my hands lol. but thats if we're able to get it fixed =P bleh!

Often the clicking described it the main fuel relay coming on and off. Stupid dry joints.
  • dry joints?
    (please explain)

did anyone check the ground wire to the motor that will always turn off a car. or the body ground from the bat to the motor. or the ground on the in side under the dash those are the man problems. any main relay from all 88-91 civics are the same if you cant find one and your good with a sodering iron you can use one from and civic 92-98 or accord ive done it. hope that fixes you problem peace.
  • We took out the main relay, it looked to be alright. I'll be sure to check what you have said. Right now we took off the manifold to check and see if the engine is even getting fuel/clean the fuel injectors (just in case).
I'm positive once we locate the problem, it'll be a cheap fix.
  • this might be way off,
but if you've got a real live tech looking at it for you........the next time this happens, ask him to pop off the valve cover to check too that your valves are seating properly.

my 1.5 was rebuilt and has had that happen 2 or 3 times after sitting too long. ( my own fault for NOT driving it enough)

my buddy identified it and with a socket extention and a rubber mallet, Taa Dah!
the only reason i mention this is because the power loss description was similar to my experience.

    good luck

:? Let's start with something easy. : :D The bogging that gets worse &worse. The NO Start. The cutting out...are all signs of a bad ignitor.Call Honda to see if your Wgn . has got the FREE Ignition Upgrade.See lower link for mo info:

  • Would this be the same for the car. even if it is a hatch back?
    it is a 1990 Hatch.

    yep.
  • Update:

My brother and his friend started to work on the car this evening.
They got it started, and it ran for a few seconds then died.

I know for fact now, the engine is getting full spark (all the wires to the distributor are fine)

the "dieing" was described as bogging down same as before.
  • SiWagonSiWagon Council Member
Is it getting spark when cranking or only when it's running?
  • It's getting a full spark. during both (at least to my knowledge)

it runs, but then quickly shuts off. i'm guessing it is some type of vacuum but again i'm not completely sure what to check.
any ideas? i know it isn't the break booster line.
