ignition lock cylinder

hey everyone.
just recently bought a replacement lock cylinder for my 87 wagon, and the original one came out no problem, but the new one wont go in at all.
all selections have been tried (the pin only goes down on the first notch anyways)
just hoping somebody here can help me out!

    one other side note...
    this is the factory replacement. everything is identical to the original.

    You've probably got this sorted by now, but just in case someone else has this problem, I was dealing with this exact issue yesterday on my '88. I found I had to rotate the key about 45 deg. counter-clockwise from the "I" position while inserting the lock assy. to get past the steering wheel lock mechanism. Once it started in, I rotated into the "I" position and finished pushing it in.
