Warm idle tach reading 0.

Hey gang,

recently my tach has started reading 0 at warm idle, if i give it a little throttle, it will jump up (i assume to where it should be, but who knows)
car is running fine, if i had no tach at all, i would never know there was a problem.

Is this a distributor problem?
Thanks.

sounds like a wire got loose or something just not making contact til you rev or the mechanics in the needle are bad my best guess have you popped it out to check the wires
  • My 90 FWD does this - I just smack the top of the instrument cluster and the tach picks up again.

God damnit, why didn't I think of that. The number of times that i say 'smash it' as a solution and i didn't even practice what i preach. i'll try that.
  • Yep, mine does this too. I specifically leave it that way so I can feel like the Fonz.

Ok, well, that didn't work. I beat the shit outta that thing and it made no effort to jump around. Oh well. Hopefully the upcoming b20z, obd0-obd1 swap will fix it.

have you taken off the bezel around it and inspected the wires?
years of being bent in the same position and always vibrating could easily be your tachs demise
someone correct me if im wrong but the blue wire on the left big plug on the instrument gauge is the coil which controls your tach and on the distributor its the blue wire assuming your still obd0 from your previous comment above about obd1 in the future
