Gasket/bolts for bolt on muffler

When putting a replacement bolt-on muffler on a 91 Wagon (2wd), do I have to use honda's $20 super thick gasket (p/n 18229-ss1-000) and $8 a piece bolts or are there auto part store equivalents available? The gasket I received from autozone with the muffler is just way too skinny. Any thoughts?

  • Can't comment on the gasket size itself, but those are generally called Donut Gasket. So I'd search around and see if you can find one in the size that fits. I've used some grade 8 bolts in place of other things in exhaust, that might be overkill who knows. But it wasn't that much cheaper that I'd not just get the proper bolts on that. But $20 for a donut gasket, that does seem a bit steep.

$20+ shipping online, $32 at my local dealer for the donut gasket. I'll take apart the old parts tomorrow and see what's buried in there. Thanks for the bolt advice.

Did you look to see if it even can bolt on? Most wagons have already had replacements, and most are welded on.

Plus, never heard of a bolt on wagon muffler fyi

Bolt ins are standard on the Honda diagrams on their parts sites. I got a muffler from autozone that has the exhaust pipe and pipe to and including the flange but the gaskets autozone offers don't match Hondas which is why I asked the original question. I'll have the old muffler off tomorrow so I guess I'll know more then

I bit the bullet and bought the genuine Honda gasket but I got new fllange bolts/springs from autozone. Biggest PIA was getting the old flange bolts out. Had to cut them then grind off the built in washers. Everything fit fine going back together and now my wagon doesn't sound like an MG. Kimd of miss it, but it was pissing off the neighbors.
  • Yeah when I was welding up a new exhaust I ran it for a bit with just some straight pipe and a glass pack. The neighbors weren't thrilled. They're dicks though so I was happy with it.
