What's your MPG?

I'm curious as to what people are getting as far as MPG goes. I feel mine could be improved.

Just post your setup and your MPG clearly.

The setup:

91 Wagon DX (zero options) with 271XXXmiles on the chassis.
DOHC ZC with Si tranny
Currently on winter tires with light rims
100% stock interior, no subs

MPG:

30 with minimum spirited driving.

I was aiming for 35 or better, and I'm gonna keep working at it until I achieved that. I don't think swapping out the tranny will do anything. I need to reduce the drag of the vehicle. I think changing the noisy wheel bearings will improve it enough.

You got a 4.25 gear in that Si tranny.A tranny swap would do it.

Already a posting.Punch in "mileage" in the search.

You mean 4.25 final drive, and no, I ain't doing a tranny swap. I don't beleive a tranny swap can do that much unless you get an HF, which is near impossible in Canada.

A big improvement will come from a Si to DX tranny swap. You'll b reving 3OOrpm less @ 70mph. I don't blame u for not wanting to do a swap. You'll be hard press to get bigger improvements.Check with one of the Hypermiler sites. They'll verify my facts. Not too many choices for mo mpg.

Run Skinny Dubs(it's like lowering the final drive),drive slower,Kick up the advance or make changes to ur driving techniques(this could get you the 10% u want). These will give you the biggest bits of improvement.Everything else is plain just nibbling at it.

 One of the BIG probs with your Wgn is it weights 2OO-3OO pounds more than a '88 or'89.It's a balancing act between mpg & performance.Once in a while you get both.Remove ram air (CAI) u might pick-up .5 mpg.look at a HF or VX for ideas(there really hard to spot). The tube between the airbox & manifold on a HF looks like the drain tube in your sink compared to the normal DX or Si.Skinny tyres could get you 1 mpg,but cornering & maybe acceleration would suck. You get the idea .You'll have to choose.
  • my RT4WD wagon exept for the 15 inch wheels completly stock I do +/- 500 km with one tank of gas. (I have no idea what that translates to in MPG)

It's not bad, when I first got it I expected worse

my 2000 civic is a vtec-e (same engine as an EK3) and with that car I once did 825 km with 45 liters.
the 825 km was the most I ever did with one tank, only highway (from Belgium to Austria) useually I do +/- 700 km on one tank that's mixed cities and highway.
  • I vote DX trans as well. My hatch got 31 ish driving normal and 35.5 -36 max babying it like a mad grandma on the SI trans. On the dx it was 34 ish normal, and 38 a couple times. One tank with the dx trans I drove like normal for everything but had 120 miles of pure highway cruising (75mph) and my average jumped up to 38.5. If I could have done a pure highway tank I am convince I would have got 42 or possibly higher mpg. I never would have got this with the SI trans. I think that if you put a differents trans in you could net 3-4 mpg better pretty easily.

i got 41 mpgs coming down from Michigan to South carolina doing about 80 mph average across hilly lanscape. i love my wagon 8)

i usually got 28mpg normal driving mixed with highway. the most ive ever gotten was 32mpg on the way from Austin to College Station

Still only a consistent 30mpg WITH an HF trans. That's almost exclusively non-highway, my commute is 16 miles of fairly busy 2-lane with lots of stop/starts. Oh, and my throttle has only 2 positions: off or on.

I wouldn't recommend HF unless you are traveling over 75 mph most of the time on flat terrain, or you have some serious torque and don't mind lugging the engine. Here in Georgia my 4th gear is useless below about 70 unless going downhill.

yeah i know what you mean. my commute to school is about 17 miles to school. so round trip its about a gallon or so everyday. it kinda sucks
  • With a 91 RT4WD I was getting 23-24 after getting new tires for the winter. I noticed the tires looked a bit flat... and they had barely 30PSI. Since I've changed my power steering to manual, it was hard to turn even when moving.

The last tank I've gone through I've got about 27MPG with almost 40PSI and I not even notice the difference in manual steering (versus the power steering I once had). This mileage includes daily (at least two 5min) warm-ups while I clean the snow and mixed city/highway driving with some heavy (above the bumper :-) snow here and there.

I'm keeping a MS Excel log of every tankful of gasoline and changing factors here and there (such as tire pressure, gasoline types and ethanol contents, driving styles, etc.) to learn what makes the RT4WD's heart beat more efficiently. I would expect to get about 30-35MPG driving around light-footed and not faster than about 60mph.

Couple things to get fixed/checked that could improve mileage:
    - alignment problem (spindle-knuckle arm bent and camber is visibly off).
    - rubber bushings in the front and back suspension need replacing.
    - perform detailed tune-up and check/adjust timming.

    i usually get between 32 - 36mpg.

    mixed driving
    MPFI swap
    intake.
  • I get like 20-25...

    I love VTEC though..
  • 1990 red rt4wd automatic
last tank i got 27mpg highway/city with only like 30 psi in the tires.
I'm gonna throw on my snows that are skinnier and smaller and this time make sure they are running correct pressure of at least 40 psi, maybe i'll hit 30 mpg! ;-)

worst i have ever gotten so far has been around 34 mpg... i average about 38, which is pretty much town and city driving with some highway.

the best i've gotten was 41 mpg (cruising at 80 mph on I-26). :P

    i <3 my wagon

if i catch a nice tail wind on my many drives across canada, i get into the 40+ range as well. the back of any wagon is like a wind sail. a headwind... kills it. down to 29-31

wtf i just realized i already posted here.

my 2wd dx gets 33.? mpg no matter how i drive it
  • I've only driven mine to work several days now since buying my car. My commute is about 90 mostly highway miles one way. In the 91 rt4wd, I'm getting about 26-27 MPGs. Kinda sucks compared to my recenlty sold CRX which got me between 35-40 MPGs! I really have to keep it down to 65 MPH. Anything else I can try other than keeping up with correct tire pressure, slowing down and a tune up? Thanks!
  • How many miles per tank are you guys getting? My 90 2wd A/T was only getting 230 or so. Does anyone know the feul capacity of the tanks? I,m guessing 11-12 gallons. I was driving All intown driving no highway.
  • The capacity is 11.9 gallons. I usually fill up at around 270 miles and it takes 9-10 gallons in my 91 RT4WD 6 speed.
  • with the Si trans, swapping in a .702 5th MIGHT help depending on your cruising RPM's with the heavier Wagon.

DOHC likes 3200-3500 rpm band. Get the alignment squared up, air up the tires, plan your trips, get a vacuum gauge.

Also learn about lean burn combustion. Via the ecu add 6 degrees of timing and cut 10% fuel, plus add more lead timing at the dizzy as needed, keep cruising vacuum above 10 in/mg even on hills.

Watching a vacuum gauge out of the corner of your eye becomes second nature, really helps the mileage. Also the above tuning info will increase gas mileage, but also increase NOx emmisions, so if you get tailpiped yearly, be ready.

My D15B7 test example, 85 whp stock, 121 whp with upgrades (BIG CAM!) that got 53 mpg.

Also, smoothly onto the gas, no stabbing. OBD-1 is nice as it shut off the injectors during coast down untill 1100 rpm. Anticapate your stopping distance = no gas used slowing down.

Blip throttle heel toe downshifts really effect fuel economy here, like 3-5 mpg city.

No way that can be true!!!!

naw its possible, i've gotten 41 mpgs before and i wasnt even trying to conserve.

I thought I remembered a thread awhile back mentioning the best mileage came from changing over to a CRX transmission. Does anyone know?

My stock '90 5-speed gets an average of 30-31 highway driving (keeping the speed below 70) and 27-28 around town (both a little lower with the A/C on). It's just about all original with 238K and still going strong. When I bought it year before last, I put it in the shop to have the timing belt, water pump, distributor, plugs and wires replaced. Three guys working in the shop offered to buy it from me, but I've been pleased that I kept it. When then engine or tranny gives it up I'd like to swap over for max fuel efficiency, put racing seats in and get a new paint job. 8)
  • nice, whole page of text timed out...........

sorry the forum ate it, have a nice day.
  • Bone, do you know if obd0 cuts fuel on coast? Also, which is better from a purely gas mileage viewpoint? To downshift or to use only brakes.

I have been contemplating a chipped ecu for fuel mileage for a little while now. Right now I get around 27 in a 4wd (was higher earlier in the year), what could I expect with a chipped ecu with your mods? I'm guessing 30-31mpg.

please retry...good stuff, and thought provoking. I've been wondering how to get more advance from my stock d15b2. Detonates under load...why?
  • I'm not sure if OBD-0 cuts fuel on coast down, PGMFI.org would know.

Best I've done with OBD-1 is coast down in the gear your in till 1200-1300 rpm, use brakes, then downshift to second is needed. For the downshift to be needed you have to drop 2-3 gears. 4-2 or 5-2, no blipping the throttle either on the downshift!

Driving with a vacuum gauge will teach you alot, esp. at cruising speed.

You see just how unsmooth you are......

I'm surprised no one's talked about making a hybrid transmission in here. I read on the honda-tech forums and I think a couple other places (maybe dseries.org?) about mixing and matching gears from d- transmissions, as in taking an SI trannie and replacing its 5th gear with a 5th gear from an HF.

Surely someone around here has done this?
  • Well, its not really in the interest of getting the best mileage. That will only improve cruising gas mileage, whereas a full dx trans will net you the best overall. It's sorta a compromise that would only really be worthwhile if you did a decent chunk of highway, otherwise it wouldn't hardly be worth the work.
