~3.5k rpm at 65mph normal?

This might be a stupid question please bare with me.

Noob here, just wondering if 3.5k RPM is normal when hitting 65MPH on the freeway? And if I wanted to go to 70mph the rpm would be around 4k. If these rpm are not normal what they should be?

I'm a new driver just got my license about a month ago and finally I'm getting a hang of driving on the freeway.

My car is a stock 1989 civic wagon 5 speed. D15 engine I believe.

that sounds about right if my recollection serves me right
i think im usually at about 4k at 80 mph , the fact of the matter is the speedos are usually pretty far off - at least on my car with 15" rims i dont think that effects the tach tho but i assume im going about 75 max at 4k

Thank you for your input! I never drove an old car before, mostly year 2000's and up and usually it maintains 65-70mph at 2-2.5k rpm.

    Also my tires are 13"

I just fell in love with the wagon when looking for my first car :)
  • FYI Rim size has nothing to do with speedo reading out, the Tyre size does. If you put 15" wheels on then as long as the correct tyres are used the overall diameter remains the same.

But 3500rpm is nothing, its a Honda, they rev.

Yep should be about 3500rpm @ 100KM/h. No worries.

Thank you guys! I was just hoping the engine won't blow on me while on the freeway.

I am going to look into swapping CX gears into the trans. I'm pulling the whole swap in three weeks. I'll let you know what I find. I wish I could just swap out the final drive but I'm sure the final is different.

Anything below the rev limit is safe for the engine
