head part identification help 1991 1.6 engine

When taking off my head to replace the gasket this fell out and I am not certain where it goes. It is a round metal cylinder that measures approximately 11mm outside, 9.85mm tall, 6.8mm inside diameter. It looks like a thicker guide pin for the headgasket but it is to small for a head bolt to fit through it. I have looked at the Honda parts manual but I cannot locate which part this is.

Does it go over the oil jet? It really does not fit over that nicely either.

  • looks like one of the guides that goes into the head and slides into a hole in the block? If i remember correctly there is a few of them on the head as to assure you set it in 100% straight.
  • Are you talking about the guides that the head bolts go through? If so this is not one of them from what I can tell. It is too small for the bolt to go through. There are two of the head bolt guides. One is the head and one on the block. This one is thicker and smaller than those two. I have looked and looked trying to find this parts location without any luck. I am starting to second guess myself where it came from.

What makes it strange is that when I pulled off the head it was just resting on one of the pistons, so I know if fell from something. I cannot see it fitting anything from the PRG-FI intake unit to the head top or bottom, or the top of the engine block. It was oily, but inside the engine oil, not caked on outside oil.

If I misunderstood your reply, please let me know.

    Thank you-

    Bolts dont go through it

    503 is correct

Same thing happened to me when I did my head gasket. Thy're not that expensive new from Honda. Just replace them. Though mine were in much worse shape.
  • They're not the ones that the bolts go through. These ones are simply there on the outsides of your head that have a corresponding hole in the block they slide into. They're just simply guides so the head mates to the block correctly.

    Does that make better sense?
  • Thanks for the replies. It ended up being the spacer for the inside timing belt cover. The little 3rd section that fits between the head and holds the top cover down. It must have fallen out when I lifted up the head from the bolt and landed on the piston.
