Squeeky noise UPDATE!!!! no more in 2wd mode.

ok so i have had a fun little go around with this car so far. First i put in a TO bearing and clutch kit, then new front rotors/pads/ cv joints. now when i go in reverse i hear a wierd squeeky sound?? also i hear it sometimes really lightly when i am in parking garages (going forward) which leads me to believe it happens all the time just LOUDER in reverse?? it is 4wd and i was wondering if maybe the rearend?? anyone have any experience with this type of noise??? is the rearend servicable?? Also if i unbolt the bolt and make it 2wd can i just take out the rear cv joints and rock it FWD??? thanks

Disconnect 4WD with the bolt as you mentioned and have a listen to see if it still makes the noise.
  • I had the exact problem....especially in reverse as you mentioned if you switch over to 2wd the sound will go away. It sounds like your u joints as that was my prblem with the exact signs yours is showing. I had to have them rebuilt as Honda has discontinued the part. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

is it difficult to replace the u-joints if i can find a set??? or what about just replacing the driveshaft entirely?? should that fix um?
  • The only way to replace the entire shaft is purchasing a used one. I had looked at this option but you just don't know what you may be getting. I found one in Phoenix but it was $200.00 plus shipping. As for what u joints to use I had a shop in Toronto complete mine, it was very expensive $400 but I do not know what U joints they used. They bore out holes for the new u joints then welded them in. If you have the tools and the know how yes, just make sure it is balanced. Some info on this link

    UPDATE!!!

So the noise finally progressed to happening all the time...I took the time today to disable 4wd and now no more problems. I had the privelage of being able to work on it on a lift so i could hear exactly where the noise was coming from (which i guess is the Coupling or whatever the thing is in the VERY center of the drive shaft). I also noticed that my rearend was moving around a little too much to me. I guess i will leave it in 2wd til i figure out exactly what the problem is. has anyone made a solid driveshaft with no coupling??? so it is engaged all the time??? thanks
  • You don't want to make a solid driveshaft. That will take out the slippage in the rt4wd (aka real-time part of it) and you will be in regular 4wd all the time (like a pickup) which will bind, cause horrible tire wear, drivetrain problems, etc. Leave it in 2wd until you find a better solution.

that is what i was wanting to know....anyone know of a coupling replacement?? also are the 'mounts' for the rearend replaceable?? they seem to be too loose to me. thanks eldonciv777
  • The mounts are replaceable, I just did mine but I have yet to use the 4wd since. As far as the coupling, do you mean the viscous coupler or the u-joints? If you mean the viscous coupler, used would be your best bet.

If you have noise underneath I would check the u-joints just to make sure before you replace anything. Just pull the driveshaft apart and make sure they aren't tight or anything.

hmm.. the u-joints are part of the drive shaft right??? it may be that making the squeeky noise. I was figuring the VC cause it is prone to fail i have heard. I do know that the 4wd seemed to be on all the time before i disabled the 4wd (at least it squeeked all the time). is there a ball bearing of some kind in the ujoints??? kinda sounds like a bearing (which is another reason i though VC). thanks for the help.

  • Mine was making the same sound in 4wd and it was the u joints on the 3rd propeller shaft. When I pulled the shaft you could see that the u joints did not move freely.
