Battery Tie Down options?

Just picked up my wagon, am in the slow process of fixing things. One thing I noticed is that the battery tie down is missing entirely. Has anyone found a source for these other than the junk yard? Something that'll work as an alternative. I've been failed for inspection for not having a tie down before.

If you're looking to rig something, I've used bungee cords (Those elastic bands with hooks on either ends). Good old fashioned rope will work too. Nylon straps would work. Maybe a dog collar for a really big dog? As far as something permanent, I'm sure a few members on here would have spare tie down brackets. You can use brackets from any civic of this generation. I've got a spare one if you're desperate, too. It's an easy pull from any junk yard with a deep 10mm socket. They ought to be cheap, too.

I don't know where you live, but I would think a safety inspector is just looking for something that does the job. I wouldn't think it has to be pretty...

Short piece of Ali, drill some holes, 6mm threaded rod heated to turn the ends into hooks and some M6 Nuts to clamp it all together
  • Yeah I remember my 89 hatchback had the same bracket so I figured they'd be the same. I'm just surprised I didn't see any at all on ebay. They were all for the newer ones where the strap goes across the battery short ways instead of the clamp on the long side running diagonal. I may just go that threaded rod and aluminum angle method. That would probably work just fine. Though my tray is half rusted anyway. Probably just replace the whole thing on down the road.

    Thanks for the tips.
  • Don't most auto parts stores sell universal replacements?
  • i have the short style tie down on my wagon from a 92-95 civic. a lot of companies make replacements for the 92 and up.
on my old civic hatchback i used to have a 50 caliber ammo box in the trunk(which a civic battery group 51 or 51r fits in very nicely, except the battery is a little taller), and than i welded a 30 caliber lid that i shortened to fit sideways on the 50 caliber box. so you could actually latch it from the side, it worked great, i wish i kept the box.
