Dim taillights

So I was told by a fellow driver that my tail lights were out. When I got back home I pulled all the bulbs out and found no blown bulbs. So I plugged them back up (without putting them back in the taillights) and had my girlfriend step on the brakes and all of them came on. I had her start the car and then step on the brake to see if they would get brighter with the car running and they didn't. Even with the car revved up to 2000 rpms they still didn't get brighter. So I put them back in the tail lights and with the brake lights applied I can barely see them on. I checked the inside of the taillights to make sure they were clean and they are. Any idea might be causing my taillights to be so freaking dim??? Also the Alternator and battery tested good.

Got a multimetre? Chuck it on the terminals of the light to see what kind of voltage you are getting.
  • Yea I never thought to do that lol. What bulb is suppost to go in the taillights? The parts store says 2057 but it has 11 something something in it. Im at work so I dont have one in front of me and all can remember is the 11 part.
  • it was most likely an 1157 which is identical to a 2057. i believe the only difference between those 2, is the 2057 is a higher wattage bulb. a bad ground is a common cause for a dim light. like haydz said, i would check voltage and continuity.
