Should I get this Civic Wagon?

A 1990 civic wagovan 4wd. The body some dents and some rust, definitely not clean. The engine has new timing belt, distributor, seals, and wires.(that's what the guy said)The car has 280,000 miles. The car is really rare since its 4wd. The car has been sitting for close to 3 years. (it started right up, with the help of a jump starter because the battery was sitting for years.) The tires are deflated and worn. I have new tires at my house though. I'm 18 years old and looking for a car for work and school. This is going to potentially be my first car. I have $3500 in the bank. The guy wants $1000 for it. (is that high? What is it worth really?) If i buy it for $1000 and i have a $1000 or more for repairs, would it be worth it? I plan on getting it painted too. What would a paint job and dents + rust cost me? Thanks :)

Not true.

You asked if you should buy it, I'm telling you no.
• You are 18 looking for your first car be patient and listen to Charb. Get something that isn't rusty, because that can kill the car and the wallet.

agree with charb. find one that's rust free. if you think "oh ill just fix the rusty bits with some good bits off another one" remember how hard it was to find this one.

body work with rust repair and a respray will be well over a grand even if you did it own your own labor unless you already had everything.

wait for the one you want.

I've spent $2,000 on a $500 car...

And I've spent $2,500 on a car...

Buy the $2,500 car, save the headache. Restoring cars isn't for everyone.

Not that hard to find. I just bought a really nice one Friday on craigslist way within your budget. I'm in NC so I'm not that far away. Stay away from rust!!
Nice wagons are out there! I know it is easy to get in a hurry. Don't - You WILL thank yourself in the end.
• All of these guys know what they are talking about. Rust is EVIL. Be patient and keep looking. One will probably find you!

• Also agree with everyone here. spending a bit more up front is worth it. You pay for what you get. Be patient and good luck.
