87 RT4WD strut question

Hi All, I've recently lowered my stock suspension on my 87 RT4wd (torsion bar suspension) and now front struts are bottoming out. Can I replace the front struts with say and 87 DX model strut that may be shorter and not bottom out? Thanks!

    If it's bottoming out does that mean the strut is shot?

    Crx suspension fits and is a bit smaller. What exactly is bottoming out? Are you hitting tire on unibody or are you just hitting the bump stops?
