Wagon is coughing up a lung.

Hope i can get a quick answer! cars starting to sketch me out after having it towed 3 times already.

last week my wagon started coughing on my way back from the store. within seconds it started loosing power when i was giving it gas. so i pulled over..kinda hanged out for a bit and drove it towards the house. maybe 5 min later at a 4 way she decided to shut down. it was turning over but not enough to start it. i had put it in neutral and it started right up. drove it perfectly fine to the house. next day it would not start up turned over many times but nothing. only once did it start up for a second. next day drove it perfectly fine. till i was not able to start it up at a Fred Meyer parking lot. left it there for the night and it started right up again in the morning... maybe a block away it died on me again while driving.
so said fuck it got it towed to the house and replaced the: fuel filter, neatural safety switch, battery, cleaned the terminals to the battery and the fuel pump looked pretty much new already. i had already replaced the distributor, igniter sparkplugs and wires about 2 months ago. Finally Hope! it started right up after the replacement. drove it perfectly fine for an hour till it stopped dead on the tracks again. had it towed AGAIN to my house. next day started right up everytime. drove it perfectly for 30 min ,parked it, turned it off. what could be causing this?!?!? don't want to take the risk of having it towed and stuck in the middle of the road AGAIN?!?!

its a 91 Honda Civic Wagon, Automatic, 16 valve.

    check out main relay issues.

i had some messed up things happen too. sometimes it would start right up, then it would turn over but not start. it died on me once but started up. i did a tune up and parked it. then when i got back into it it would not start.

checked fuel pressure and spark had neither. tried listening for the clicks to prime the system heard nothing. ordered a main relay and once i found out where it was installed it and my problem is solved.

also 6 valve? that might be your problem too :devilish:
  • GAHH 16! oops ...thanks ill check it out.
  • K so I checked the main relay perfectly fine nothing out of the ordinary. It has been running for a week in a half now or since I posted this. Perfectly fine! But then today on my way to work it died on me while driving 55mph?! Any other suggestions to what it could be?

the relay only seem to do poorly when they actually get warm.

sounds like relay or ignition switch to me.
  • K ill have to wait and let it cool down. I have been driving it all day.
  • So before I put in the new ignition switch it did start up for a split sec before it died. Went ahead and installed the new switch but still nothing :( still turning over but doesn't want to start up. Main Relay is still pretty much new.

I'm going with distributor. I know you've replaced it, but maybe swap the old one back in temporarily to test the difference?
  • It livesss!! I went ahead and took off the distributer cap to see if the roater was spinning it was j wentahead and putt the cap back on and tightned up the bolts due to the lack of daylight I had left, tried one more time and fired right back up?! Drove it a bit, turned it on and off a few times perfect. Bit I did get a smell of somthing possibly burning? Not sure.
  • I was having the exact same problem! I replaced the fuel pump, and alternator and NOTHING! Finally we looked at the ignition switch and yup, it was all burnt up. Replaced that and now it drives with no problem : )
