mcmuda's wago

I'm fairly new here and just posted my intro thread with a teaser pic. I'm from Austin, TX and just finished up Uni over at UTSA. I literally bought the car a few weeks back and did changes here and there.

It's a 1988 Civic Wagon in DX trim. Paint is original and no fading what so ever. Interior was well kept and only flaw it has is it needs a good steam cleaning.

General:
All maintenance done with new fluids
Owned by a friend and a Honda Tech before him

Interior:
3in shifter extender in Neo Chrome finish
Mugen Knob
Short shift
Grant wood grain wheel
Broadway blue tinted convex rear view mirror
JDM (yo) subway train handle

Exterior:
Slowly trying to replace my cracked lights..
88 EF amber bumper lights
Inner rear tails from an RT4WD
Volvo 740 Front lip
Chargespeed replica wing (took it off)
Mud flaps

Suspension/Brakes:
CRX Racelands maxed out
Camber kit all around
Front and rear strut bars
Full overhaul of the braking system
Full overhaul of the suspension

Wheels/tires:
Drag DR27 16x8 +15 (Mugen M7 reps) with 205/40s..rode like crap
Kosei K1 15x7 +38 with 195/50 (looking to get some spacers soon)

On to the pics! It will be in a chronological order from when I purchased her till now.

My sister's lowered and well maintained Integra SE, '90 LS400 (single owner), and my Suzuki SX4 which is currently going back to factory spec. We also have a '10 Honda Pilot 4WD Touring. We like our japs :P

And here's a shot of my previous project (somewhat of a project). It's going back to factory spec so I can give it to my sister. I'll probably buy an EF sedan sometime in the near future.

    Thank you!

I'm slowly gathering parts and trying to get a different set of wheels. I'm known amongst the car community for going through wheels like socks..
  • Wagon is clean!! I like :applouse:

White just looks to perfect for these cars. Ride looks amazing to me

Thanks ya'll! I'm going to fit the wing on again and see if I can fix the gap..it was leaking water into my hatch so I had to take it off. So far everything is been going swell..I actually started taking it to San Antonio few times a week. That's about 240 mile round trip in a day. Goes without a hitch!

I'll be raising it up so it doesn't bounce anymore..it's soooo bad!!

    Update:

Traded my Koseis for some jmags (similar to my first set but not as wide) with 205/50s. It rides sooooooo much better now. I raised the rear 1/8 of an inch for a raked setup. It handles quite well too. Only thing I need to fix is, recharge my AC with the converted fittings and clean out the hoses on my heater. So far it's been holding up well. Maybe tint?

What's been done since the last post:

    JMAGS
MPC Motorsport wood grain shift knob
Installed a 4 spoke Grant steering wheel (made in Italy lol)
Got rid of the Boso exhaust and I'm using a 350Z midpipe as a muffler. It's not as loud as the previous setup but it offers a deep note. No fart sounds! :D
Adding my German license plate tomorrow
Replaced the warrantied alternator I got from AutoLame. It went out after 8 months!

Here's a naked shot of her underside ;). Sadly, the previous owner rocked it at a VERY low height. You can see the scrapes and breaks all along the underside. I raised it and it handles better now!

Here's a link for those interested in the cup holder: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cup-Holder-Table-VIP-Style-Mount-to-Door-or-AC-Vent-For-Car-Truck-Van-JDM-Japan-/251346330372?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a8568a304&vxp=mtr

It's one of those VIP cup holders that are installed using clips. Not much else. They give you double sided tape but I chose not to ruin my interior. It stays on despite my wago being a tad bouncy.

Where did you get the ShiftKnob? Is it real wood?
I was planning on making myself one who looks like that.

Looking super, I don't have a wagon yet so I don't know firsthand, is that the stock exhaust path on the 2wd models?

I don't think my exhaust is in the stock position. The stock muffler would hang lower and I believe the cat back came through to the muffler in a different manner. This was setup by my friend (the previous owner) to avoid scraping the exhaust since he was riding so low. I'm fixing to get a new tip tomorrow..most probably a screw on tip from AutoZone or Wal-Mart.

Yup, it's real! It's from a company called "MPC Motorsport" via eBay. Fits quite well and makes for a lovely driving experience. Wood grain looks good in most cases if it is executed properly.

Thank you all for the kind comment! :D. I'm using this '79 Civic's interior as inspiration. You can never go wrong with a classic :). I'll posted an updated interior pic with my new floor mats. I was doing some maintenance today and ended up changing the distributor cap gasket and the o-ring. The gaskets were so old that they turned into brittle plastic. The bad gasket also caused a minor oil leak which would create an awful burning smell while driving. This wagon is my CHILD! It requires unconditional love <3

Ive seen their knobs before, I'm a fan!
Still need a Nardi-matching wood-knob to replace my bubble shifter.
Making myself will be much cheaper but I'm pretty tempted to support their awesome business.

Just realised Its you on Facebook, I love that interior man, just cant go wrong with classic.

Yup that's me! I was planning on getting a bubble shifter but all the Honda guys here in Texas have one.

    Update:
I adjusted my valve clearances as it was long over due for one. The clearances on the intake and some on the exhaust side were poor. I did it and now the motor actually sounds quieter and has a smooth idle. Only issue I'm having now is, very very light white smoke is emitted from the exhaust pipe when I launch the car SOMETIMES. It doesn't happen all the time. My oil looks good and so does my coolant and I HIGHLY doubt my head gasket is a culprit here.

However, I did have a slight mishap when changing the old valve cover grommets out with new ones. A small piece of the rubber grommet, about half a finger nail size, fell into the valve train. Would that cause light smoke if it's getting burnt up? I tried everything to find it and dig it out but it was all to no avail.

The car does not have a bad idle and seems to have a better throttle response and more power due to the adjustment. Would light smoke come out of the exhaust if I made a clearance too tight? Or can it be that the valves were not adjusted for such a long time that the motor is getting adjusted to the tighter clearances?

A little info on the car: Had 192,532 Miles when I adjusted my valves (yesterday lol). Has an exhaust which is straight piped with one resonator and I'm using a 350Z mid pipe as a muffler.
  • Being Japanese I laugh every time I see one of those cup holders. Props to a TX Wagon!

Haha thanks! It's the most practical mod done to my car..I can drink coffee now!

    Some updates:
Got rid of my J-Mags and got ITR rep wheels 16x7 205/45 and added some Weapon R yellow checkered mats. Looks like I'll be needing new valve seals. I'll be ordering a new set of coilovers also. Any suggestions? I'd like to stay away from the cheaper brands as my racelands are horrid.

I like what you've been with this wagon! The woodgrain looks awesome with the blue interior.

As far as coilovers, I have TEIN basic dampers on mine, have bad them for about 7 years now and 50k miles and they ride great. Comfortable enough for daily driving and stiff enough ro have fun :) They cost me $680 back in '07.

I've got Function Form Type 1s and so far I'm liking them pretty well. Picked them up for $600.
  • mcmudamcmuda Band Wagon
I'm most probably gonna go for the Teins..Stiff ride but I can tolerate it as long as it's not bouncy!
  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
Its far from bouncy. I also replaced all bushings with polyurathane which tightened the car up a lot. Handles like its on rails!

Been really busy with my last semester in school so I haven't had much time to sit down and order new suspension bits.

Although, here are some minor updates:

Got rid of my ITR reps and went with some OG Axis oldskools 15x8 +25 on 195/50. I'm running it at a cambered setting (i forget the exact numbers). I just finished up my other car (the suzuki) and will be dailying that instead. The Suzuki is back to factory spec..it looks like a jeep now O_O

    Update:

Got new wheels again. STR 502 15x8 +10 on 205/55..it rubs REALLY bad if you're uber low. I raised it 1.5in the rear and 1in up front. Front still rubs a tad. The tires had already added .5in in height. I like being functional..I can fly on turns now without hitting anything lol. I need a new fender :/

A pic of the collection minus the Lexus LS400. All run like new ;)
    1463122_10151983026723468_1002488751_n.jpg

And a side shot of my wagon. It looks beast in person..the front end looks menacing! I'm so happy to have it at this setting..time for more bracing and suspension mods! I need to hit up some more HPDE events <3
