My Toy Wagon...... warning rusty

so i picked this wagon up today. it has rt4wd and the wagon runs and drives.

but theres a bunch of things wrong with it. heres the bad

1. super rusty
2. previous owner tried to fix rust with expandable foam and paint.
3. missing interior pieces
5. brakes suck. feels like i can push them down but it wont stop good.
6. exhaust is cob jobbed
7. CEL is on but owner said it doesnt have a o2 sensor... so idk
8. axle ticks or knocks when turning one way
9. huge dent under the body. like the guy jumped it and landed on a rock
10. clutch is weird. holds the power of the single but seems like its shot
11. hood and most body panels are too bad to save.
12. needs interior pieces and the heat / a/c controls ill take pics tomorow
13. e brake barley works

but theres some positives too

1. came with polished si rims
2. good snow tires
3. starts up and drives
4. rt4wd works
5. had a aftermarket stereo and speakers
6. sunroof
7. has new front suspension kit
8. cold air intake
9. roof rack
10. original wheel is nice

i have big plans for this pile of honda rust. i dont want it to be a show car. its going to be built to drive. not for looks. so the body will most likely stay beat looking.

i do however want to handle good and i want it to stop good.

my plans are to:

1. fix brakes maybe upgrade the master with new lines
2. lift suspension and poly bushings with new bolts
3. clutch kit and maybe a new cable
4. figure out why the CEL is on
5. compression test
6. turbo, tune with fuel setup
7. 14" rims with 185 75 14 or 195
8. exhaust
9.figure out why noise is coming from pass side when turning
10. fix missing center console pieces
11. gut interior and clean it as much as i can
12. new fluids
13. soda blasting everything once my garage is set up.
14. rear sway bar
14. disc brakes rear maybe?
15. custom beagle bar
16. remove power steering, a/c also removing abs if it has it
17. racing equipment ie, seat, harness, roll bar, fire equipment etc.
18. hydro handbrake
19. plus more im sure

if any of you guys know anything i am looking for please let me know. this car is not my daily. its a toy. it will be used more in the winter and off road.

i agree with you. i need to fix my brakes first. but the cheaper things or free things i will do first.

hahaha thanks. yes its going to be fun. i may take a video today in hd of the wagon to give you guys a idea of the mess i got myself into.

    [IMG][/img]20130316180342.jpg

already got these for the wagon. i like 14s on the wagon for some reason. but i have a few 15s just incase i dont like them.

i am going to paint them white. i would love to find some bbs turbo fins or something similar for my rims.

Assess the rust carefully before you put a lot of sweat into this shell. We've seen some instances where structure was seriously compromised. One car actually had the differential mounts rotted out of the body. Like Morty said, can't cure rust. You may consider ( if it is really THAT rusty) finding a clean southern shell to convert with the RT parts.

Anyway, sounds like a fun project! I like to see these cars well-used, and you look to be headed in that direction.
  • took some random pics of the car. this is how i recieved the car. i didnt clean it or fix anything yet. i just wanted to give you guys a look at what im working with. please comment and let me know what you think. also if you spot something please point it out. i am used to eg/dc obd1 hondas. so please help me with the obd0 stuff.

some of the pics i wrote some info underneath so take your time to read through and look at the pics. i will be making videos of this too in hd. but i had no time to today.

custom hood popper. the owner told me the factory one broke and it was too much to fix so he improvised....

    [IMG][/img]axi6.jpg

this doesnt leak and i like it alot more than roof.

    [IMG][/img]kkrg.jpg

worst place i have seen for rust. theres a hole.....

looks like a mess i know it. i am going to need help finding out what goes where and what does what soon enough. i want to put back the climate controls and vents. so i might need help figuring out what clip goes where.

    [IMG][/img]01fr.jpg

    [IMG][/img]9vxi.jpg

    [IMG][/img]s6x8.jpg

atleast we know the previous owner was having fun with this wagon :devilish:. i hope i dont find anything else too nasty. the dirt and grim is not pleasing at all. so getting it in with those conditions is weird.

    [IMG][/img]j5gk.jpg

    [IMG][/img]vzrg.jpg

    [IMG][/img]36cm.jpg

some misc interior pieces. hopefully its all the things i need.

    [IMG][/img]9vn6.jpg

previous owner had a sound system in here. he had subs in his garage he must of taken them out. door speakers and the rest sound great. no antenna tho. i am removeing the stereo. might run a cb or tunerview in the place of it.

    [IMG][/img]qeak.jpg

i need one of those trunk props or struts. i need to find that thread on here. i saw one night but forgot to bookmark it. so if you guys have the link please post it here or pm me.

    [IMG][/img]j1rv.jpg

    [IMG][/img]rmv6.jpg

whats that thing on fire wall with vac lines going to it with a clip?

    [IMG][/img]kv77.jpg

    [IMG][/img]akjc.jpg

    [IMG][/img]gpwr.jpg

under the hood is super dirty and grim all over. i am going to wd40 everything soon. i will post after pics once i do so.

what do you guys think about deleting the brake booster? also is that a wagon booster and master?

i need info on a oil dip stick too. this one seem to be aftermarket. if any of you guys can help or know the proper length of the dip stick for d series please lmk.

also if you can tell from the pics if this is obd1 or obd0 post it here.

    [IMG][/img]1q5n.jpg

that tumor looking thing on the exhaust is a bunch of weld. guy must of fluxed welded for the first time. exhaust sounds ricey stright piped. even has a fart canister out back.

    [IMG][/img]44l6.jpg

also that hole is right where the dent is. the previous owner must have jumped it and smashed a rock. you can fell it in the floor boards on drivers side.
    [IMG][/img]kmt2.jpg

    [IMG][/img]co6l.jpg

    [IMG][/img]9i8r.jpg

exhaust is going to be a pain on this wagon. i might do a side sweeping exhaust once turbo and dp is mounted. but thats in future.

i plan on having this build done within 3months.

    thanks

Dude that is a lot of rust.

I know the hatch is an easy replace. 4 bolts and good to go.

two of the pictures you show is the unibody runners that have come apart. That wagon took a good hit on that rock.

yes its alot of rust. i want to fix the structure or the main points that need it. then for body i am going to replace doors, hood and hatch if i can find a deal on the body.
and patch the rust hole with new metal.

i have a welder but im not too good at body work. so if you have any tips please share them.

yea this wagon has had a amazing life. it has been daily driven since 1989 and it survived a beating. so i cant just throw it away.

i want to save a wagon.... just like the sticker
  • You asked about the stuff on the firewall and the canister.... the stuff on FIrewall is your map sensor... the big canister with the hoses running to it is a Vacuum canister its part of the California clean air act.... Necessary if you live in a state that has emissions testing........ you do have a lot of work ahead of you for sure but there r quite a few threads on here that have undergone the same amount of rust as you and have come out super clean. It is a daunting ask to say the least but keep your chin up we r here to help..... Dont give up on the girl. She will be worth it in the long run... Oh and your car is a MPFI OBD-0 car

    thanks for the info FullThrottleFreak.

i think i am going to remove that canister. hopefully the delete isnt too bad. i dont think its doing me any good. or is it?

is the vaccuum canister needed for the map? or can i remove it and plug the holes? will it mess up how it runs and drives?

    thanks for the reassurance too.
  • I have always left the canister and just dressed it up with some hose looms and wrapped the canister with a piece of bright aluminum. I don't know what the effect of removing it would b.
  • rbwdrivenrbwdriven Senior Wagonist
Yeah it is amazing on what we do to our wagons once we get them.

The vacuum canister is hooked up for the map sensor as well as the purge on the gas tank.

ya i guess ill leave it on this wagon. hopefully i get another wagon from a wagon enthusiast on here.

yes it has. but i am sure it had a bunch of fun days too.

my favorite pic. didnt do much to it. ive been riding in the supercharged b18c eg.
  • bam-bambam-bam Council Member
    Looks good.

The canister in question ONLY captures the fumes from the fuel tank vent and purges them into the intake. The MAP sensor is completely separate. While the charcoal filter does play an important part, it doesn't affect the tailpipe emissions as tested here in GA. Technically it is a piece of emissions gear and legally should not be removed. I don't have them on my cars.
  • thanks bam bam for info.

    http://honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=832089

i wonder if i swap the crx/ef rear struts with the wagon springs in the back if that will be a good combo to lift it?

the civic guys use the wagon struts to lower it. so wouldnt the crx struts raise ours?

also picked up some 94 accord front suspension. off a low mile accord.
  • 281.jpg

got the injectors in the mail. some blue top dsm 450cc. i can keep the resistor box and they were a good deal.

    282.jpg

picked up some bottle caps for my dirt/gravel tires. the vw snowflakes just dont look cool enough

i want to paint them white once my tires are on.

    283.jpg

    284.jpg

super dirty..... but some cheap all wheel cleaner from advanced auto destroyed it with a cheap brush. all i did was spray the cleaner let sit for a min. scrub with the brush then rinsed.

look alot better imo... you can see the one clean face up top.

    285.jpg

once i figure out a spacer for the rear trailing arm i will lift it. i have every part i need except the spacers.

    [IMG][/img]mkza.jpg

    [IMG][/img]lidj.jpg

    [IMG][/img]cyin.jpg

also i found a climate setup from a wagon on ebay. bought the pm6 ecu there too. i am sending it out to xenocron to get socketed and chipped. hes is a amazing tuner and he does good soldering.

but for this wagon i am tuning it myself with the help form all my buddies too alot of helpfull people at pgmfi.org. i am having chris make me a base map and once i get turboedit running good with no errors ill be tuning with obd0 for nearly free.

    [IMG][/img]u2af.jpg

also my battery is draining itself out overnight... i bought a battery killswitch so i can basically unplug my battery until i can find the culprit. its either some acc causing a parasitic drain or the diode in the alt. could it be bad ground wires? i am swaping them too. could a fuse do that?

also are wagons set up for a rear sway bar? i know the rear lca's do not have the sway bar mounts but is the body set up for the sway bar mounting spots? where the bushes go?

also if anyone who has spaced the rear trailing arm will the bolts i have work? or does the entire bolt need to be threaded? i think royman and 503wagon would be the best to ask.

thanks for you help and good luck.

Make sure your brake lights are not staying on ;)
brake light stop switch bumper likes to break and fall in the floor causing the brake lights to stay on.
If that's not the issue, check it anyway because its going to happen!

    i will check that out.

i noticed my lights stay on when i turn the car on. not the brake lights but the running lights. even with the headlight switch off they are on. so the previous owner must of cobbed something or its another thing.

or do the 91 civics running lights go on auto when you turn the key?

    [IMG][/img]gb4n.jpg

the USPS guy came today with my tires. i went with a retread all terrian tire. 195/75/14 should be about 25"-26" tires. $300 shipped $70 mounted and balanced

    [IMG][/img]tivv.jpg

so once i had them back home i decided to paint them. i am using white plastidip did 4 rims with 1 can.

    [IMG][/img]n1wr.jpg

i used some cheap $1 playing cards to protect the rubber from over spray. alot faster imo than tape. used some tin foil to cover valve stems.

    [IMG][/img]htsa.jpg

painted all four. a few coats on each one.

then i took some ebay tire letter paint and painted the goodyear letters white.

let me know what you guys think. should i paint the rest of letters? or just the goodyear?

    just goodyear it is.

also a update on the 503wagon lift.

the front top hats rt4wd are alot smaller in diameter than the accord. the spring will not fit in the top hat with the rubber bushing in the top hat...... so i had to cut the liner a bit and installed it. the top hat was sitting funny too. but it looked similar to roy's GNAR wagon. its not perfect but it worked.

    [IMG][/img]69oi.jpg

    [IMG][/img]q50w.jpg

thats a 6x6 under the mud flap above.

    www.civicwagon.com[/IMG]

thats the 195 75 14 tire in front of the stock wagon rear. looks huge for a civic

i just did the drivers side. it was a huge pain. but i did install the strut without removing the lower ball joint, the tie rod, and that front traction arm or torsion bar? 503wagon said he had to remove it. ill try removing them on the pass side and let you guys know. i might take a video of it

thanks i got another set of tires in mind for my new rims.

i dont have time to do the entire shell. i will however do all the rusty spots then patch it with metal the best i can. i want to find a rear hatch and a hood bad.

for the frame side skirt area i want to make sliders like someone on here did. mine are rusty and it can add some strength.

    [IMG][/img]gum3.jpg

what do these clips plug into? is one for the o2 sensor?

    [IMG][/img]xfmj.jpg

also i picked up a new battery seeing how my old one wouldnt hold a charge.

    [IMG][/img]yj7a.jpg

my cx racing turbo kit came today too. t04e turbo with huge compressor wheel.

    [IMG][/img]sctq.jpg

also heres a sneak peak of whats in store for the wagon

    [IMG][/img]mlgi.jpg

let me know what you guys think. also the turbo kit is ment for a 92-00 civic so i hope it works
  • I think its awesome... did you ever mount the passenger side wheel on stock lift so i can see the clearance there?
  • I think its awesome... did you ever mount the passenger side wheel on stock lift so i can see the clearance there?

no i didnt do that yet. theres a few other pics lurking around with that 195 75 14 on stock suspension. the worst that could happen is tires dont fit so you need to spend $200 on a lift.

heres some updates with my wagon.....

custom pool ball shift knob. used a Q ball. i made a couple more but i like this the best

    [IMG][/img]ucze.jpg

installed the B&M fuel pressure gauge and a new fuel filter from napa. 40psi with vac line removed and about 31psi with it on.

    [IMG][/img]ign8.jpg

also watching all you guys with the roof racks made me buy one of these. thanks for all the help guys. i picked this up and i like it

    [IMG][/img]4bv0.jpg

the hatch opens and my sun roof opens. perfect fit.

    [IMG][/img]b5jy.jpg

i am going to mount some shovels and a pick axe to the sides. to give it that outlander look. similar to this

    fourtreks_dual_tool_mount_enl.jpg

i want to make a rear tire carrier too. simple swing out that holds a jerry can of gas 5gal with a full size spare.

    wrrjcso_4.jpg

    wrrjcso_8.jpg

also i want a snorkel like a member on here has. but he got rid of it because his turbo intake was on the other side. so i will wait until my turbo is installed.

i cant wait to rip this thing through the trails.
