88 wagovan new distributor problems

Ive got a new to me 88 wagovan with an auto tranny 2wd. It had an occassional miss and spark knock but it ran fine. so I went to do a tuneup and found a cracked coil when I took the cap off the dizzy. Spark plugs were fouled and oil in the holes from leaky gaskets. So..new ngk plugs and wires and a new distributor, cap, rotor.

Drove 10 miles after install and it ran great. Went to move it later and it stalled out, so I let it sit.

This morning I went to go to work and it started up, ran fine and it stalled coming to a stop sign a mile later. After cranking it finally started and drove ok for 3 miles to work. Went to leave and started it to warm it up first. Came back 5 minutes later and it was low idle and blackish smoke, gave it some gas and it died. I was able to get it to starrtand drive it home.

Now it will start and idle fine in park. Move it to reverse it dies immediately. Start it in neutral is runs and revs fine, move it to drive and it dies.

Any ideas? Ive tried disconnecting battery but it doesnt help.

Pull the pass. side carpet to see if there's a code on the ECU.You erased it when you disconnected the battery.Maybe a new code came back.

    If it's a new distributor(dizzy) .If it's warrantied try exchanging it.Also make sure it's the rite dizzy.There are 2.
Otherwise read following link for possible free HONDA ignition upgrade :

You may have multi probs. It maybe the circuit that controls the idle in gear.

    Are you getting a CEL?

    What brand is the distributor?
  • Thanks for the help. I was getting code 4 from the cel. Turned out to be a bad crankshaft position sensor in the distributor. It was bought new off of ebay from Chandler motorsports for 85 bucks so I should have known better. Ponied up at carquest and all was good again.
