Transmission Trouble

Hi, I'm new here I picked up my first 1990 RT4wd, 6 speed wagon, that had a busted transfer case. After a quick search I found another complete tranmission that looked the same from the outside. After installing it I realized that the final gear will not engage. I have changed the oil in the transmission, tried putting it in the final gear (5th). nothing reverse is still where it should be also. After checking it on jack stands all the other gears are in working order. The guy I bought it from said it came out of a 88 Wagon. Everything else bolts up, its currently in the car I plan on this car being my daily driver and would really like the final gear(5th). My question is did they offer a RT4wd in just a 5 speed? I hope to post pictures in the next day or so.

    To my knowledge, they all had 6 forward gears, with the 'extra' one being a super-low granny gear.
    Just to be clear- the gear you're missing is the one opposite reverse on the shift pattern, like regular 5th?

    Yes the gear opposite of reverse. I can't seem to get to engage even with the car not running. And by engage I mean will not go forward into gear it just stops only going backwards into reverse.
