Step by step Intructions.

I've been searching and haven't found anything very helpful on how to remove the axles on a RT4WD up to removing the tank.
I saw Bams comment on how to remove gas tank but nothing that really helped me out. (sorry Bam)

So does anyone have a Step by Step write up on removing the axles, driveshaft, and gas tank for new people with a RT. I've never dealt with anything like this set up.

What are you trying to get at? You know on RTs, you can access the pump from under the seat, right?

i think you'll have to remove the whole rear diff to drop the tank, that's why the hole for access.
  • I have to drop the tank (has a hole in it that I can't patch. I've never dealt with anything with a diff before and I have no Idea how to get the axles out of the diff or even how to drop the diff. So that's pretty much where I was getting at.
  • Anyone know If I can get away with just dropping the driveshaft out of the way without pulling the axles?
  • Drain fluid from Diff

Un bolt Rear LCAs from RTA, pull shafts out of diff.

    Unbolt UJ on driveshaft.

    Unbolt diff

Alright, I got most of it out. It's actually a lot easier then I thought... I'll do up a DIY with pictures in the next week once my tank comes in.

It's actually fairly easy as long as your wagon isn't really thick undercoated haha.

Without taking out axles and LCA's on a rt4wd.

So all I did was jack it up as high as I could and through jackstands under it.
Took the 4 bolts around the diff off (12 point 10mm wrench or socket)
    dropped that down.
Unbolted the 2 17mm bolts from the bracket on the diff.
Unclamped all the fuel hoses and from the fuel pump.
Removed the fuel pump. (from under the seat)
    dropped the exhaust
Then unbolt the 2 long 14mm bolts that hold up the diff.
slowly drop the diff (I used a jack)
Now remove the 2 tank straps (12mm) and it should just drop right down.

Hopefully that helps you. I'm not very good at wording stuff haha.

Ah, so you were able to just lower the differential without having to pull the axles, and had enough space to drop the tank? Good to know.

Yes I had plenty of room. It was a lot easier honestly

I didn't know. When I had my RT's tank out there was just a little bit more going on back there!

Mine has been undercoated to the point were I had chip it away to get to the bolts haha. It sucked.

Dropped my tank and diff yesterday. Unfortunately my wagon has been sitting for 4-5 years so im in the process of cleaning out the tank... Has anyone bought a replacement tank for a wagon? Also I had to cut the straps due to hardware being completely rusted away. Will autozone straps/hardware be fine for a replacement?

I cleaned my tank with Acetone. You can find a gallon of it at Home Depot for under $15.
I poured that in my tank and swooshed it all around for about 5 minutes (drain it out) and then filled it with water and did the same thing. You really only need to do it once but I did it once but I did it twice to make sure all the pine needles and dirt got out in the tank.

I went on ebay and found on that looked just like the one I need for the rt4wd but when it came in the mail it was a crx one... I emailed the company and they haven't responded. I really can't find a rt4wd gas tank anywhere. Try to find one from a junkyard if possible.

For the autozone straps and hardware I really don't know. I'd assume it would be fine. Buy it and if it doesn't work then bring it back.

Well guess what... Just popped a damn hole in my tank. I was cleaning off some exterior rust and BOOM started leaking. Luckily I found a tank and im hoping its in good condition!

Damn. that sucks... Well best of luck.

Well the tank I found fell through... Now on the hunt for a wagon fuel tank :/
  • wago671wago671 Wagonist
That sucks man. Hopefully you can find one. Just check for local junkyards if possible first. I can't find any on eBay either.

Had to pay to have my tank refurbished which set me back quite a bit... now i'm stuck with out any hardware to hang the tank.
  • wago671wago671 Wagonist
Is autozone pricey for the hardware?
  • Madr0xMadr0x New Wagonist
They don't carry anything. I ordered duralast straps from rock auto that haven't arrived yet. Now I'm trying to track down replacement bolts...
  • Madr0xMadr0x New Wagonist
Well autozone has straps... no hardware **
  • wago671wago671 Wagonist
Ahh I got you. Hopefully you get everything situated. Hate seeing Wagons down. I'm still in the process of fixing mine. Everything is hooked up but fuel pump likes to hum (like it's supposed to) but when I went to prime it, it just stopped working. I gotta put a toggle switch to the fuel pump and manually do it.
  • Madr0xMadr0x New Wagonist
    Main relay issue?
  • wago671wago671 Wagonist
Brand new main relay. I'm thinking a grounding issue with the fuel pump. Going to make a whole new ground for it when I get a chance to.
  • wago671wago671 Wagonist
I WILL ADD TO THE DROPPING OF THE DIFF PART. Make sure when you jack the diff back up that the axle are set in right into the diff or the axle will rip through the boot.
