88 rt tranny work in an 87?

I have some bearing noise in my transmission (5 speed +SL) and my clutch is about shot. I have a lead on an 88rt4wd wagon parts vehicle. Can I swap the tranny and clutch into my 87? Btw I searched and found nothing. Thanks in advance.

    87=3rd gen, correct?
    88=4th gen?
