slappy brake drum, I think...

We just bought a 90 civic wagon and the person who sold it said it needed back brakes as it made a noise when the peddle was depressed. It was not the grinding metal on metal. It sounded like it was making a whomp sound every time the drum rotated as in one rotation, one whomp. We bought brakes just in case and took it home. next day pulled the drum off the passenger side and the brakes were very good. I took them apart and inspected the adjuster which looked like nothing was broken then put it back together. Guess what? the noise stopped. I pulled the drum off the drivers side and brakes were fine there also. We drove it about 40 miles to get it smogged and the noise very slightly came back when the brake was depressed. what it sounds like is only one shoe is being pushed against the drum as it makes the sound every time the tire turns, then the sound happens again. I thought it might be a stuck plunger in the brake cylinder but the noise did stop totally after I put it back together. any thoughts?

    I'm having a similar problem. I think it's a warped drum.
  • I'll second the warped drum. Get them turned or replaced.

Also, make sure your adjuster is greased so it can move freely.
