Oil filter - Proper Stuck!

Hi guys,

I've been trying for half the day to get the bloody oil filter off. I've drained the oil and no luck getting off the filter, I've used a oil filter chain wrench but it was on too tight and nearly pierced the old filter. I had to top up with new oil and leave for another day.

How do you guys take off the filter with out messing it up?

I have a 1.6i 4WD. Any help would be great!

    You have to destroy it.

I usually hammer a long phillips screw driver through it for the bottom and use that as a lever to get it moving.
  • I usually get a screwdriver and a hammer and stick it through, then you have more leverage to turn it. It is messy, but it is the only way usually.
You can try with a belt or some sticky gloves.

Oil filter can be removed by hand usually.Mechanics usually over tighten them. Some other things to try:

1)I use a Lisle 63600 Oil Filter Tool($12 aprx) .U attach a 3/8 drive ratchet to it.It has 2 jaws that squeeze into the filter as u unratchet it.
2)wrap a few rubber bands around the end & unscrew.
3)Use a mouse pad.The foam side has friction.
