Rack & Pinion

Anyone ever had to replace the rack & pinion on their wagon??? My 91 AWD needs it replaced. Thinking of going used as this does not seem to be a common problem on Honda's in general. The cheapest aftermarket one I can find is $400.00.......used one for $65.00. Any suggestions.

Cheers

how did yours go bad? was it perhaps the tierod boots got torn and dirt got into the rack?

i've never heard of a 4th gen rack going bad, so i say just get a used one. if thats bad just get another :P still cheaper then $400 ;)
  • I don't know how it went bad........but after rebuilding the u joints on the drive shaft and replacing the radiator and swapping a blown engine.....it is starting to become a bit much. It appears the seal is gone and accoding to my buddy at Honda it's less labour to replace the rack then just the seal. I agree and I am leaning towards the used rack.....I have never heard of this on a Honda before. I have owned 5 civics and an element and I have never had this problem before.
  • I swapped my power steering rack for a manual one. (I had to reuse one of the boots and the rubber mount gaskets, but otherwise it's still complete.) The job isn't all that tough, if you can get under the car comfortably. My replacement rack was even cheap: less than $50.

I've never heard of these going bad, and I don't remember seeing any problems on the board. I don't think it's a Honda epidemic. Sounds like you've just got a very "well-used" car.
